Already renowned as Britain's Favourite Circus, Zippo's company members are celebrating recent World successes.

Amazing Ukrainian strongman Denys 'Hercules' Ilchenko is now Guinness World Champion at 'juggling heavy objects' - he successfully juggled three giant motor tyres. a feat he performns daily at Zippo's performances.

We already knew he was the World's Greatest Ringmaster, but Norman Barrett MBE is now Guinness World Champion as the world's longest-serving circus host with 47 years of ringmastering behind him (and plenty more to go!)

To crown a glorious touring season which has taken the 2013 production 'Carnaval' to towns and cities across the country from northern Scotland to England's south coast, Zippo's Circus has just been voted 'Britain's Best Classical Circus with Animals' in an on-line poll of circus aficionados.

All of which goes to prove that audiences are in for a treat when the famous circus performs at Peckham Rye Common from Thursday 26th September until Tuesday 1st October.

Interesting comment. The staff are certainly speedy, but in fact the needs of short-term events such as this are recognised in Planning law. So it's not fly-posting. And you'll remember from past years that the poster boards are removed afterwards. See you at the circus!

How about when you remove other people's legally placed posters to make room for your own?

How about when, as I heard from one ED shopkeeper, you go into their shop in order to put a poster on the inside of their glass door without having the courtesy to ask them if you can?

Circus is a great experience for kids! and it's a nice experience to share in family.

I am glad one of those is stopping here!

It was among my best childhood memories each time my parents brought me to see the excellent , very professionnal Arlette GRUSS circus when it came in our city.

The big posters hang up everywhere for few days are part of the circus folklore as it is with fairs.

Perhaps you should think to remove the words "De la France" from your named picture on your post, who knows... :)

From what I've saw with those kind of shows, the companies always removed their advert after the period of representation in an area.

Best of luck!!

Val

Zippos might remove the poster boards from around the park (eventually!), but they certainly don't from the empty shops on Forest Hill Road. Nor do they seem to feel the need to ask permission from the newsagent/post office to plaster them all over his newspaper delivery box.

These advertisements are, like estate agents' signs, deemed to have consent, subject to specific conditions, including:

CLASS 3F - Adverts for Fairs & Circuses:-

* The Local Authority must be informed of the sites for the adverts 14 days before the notices are posted.

* The adverts may only be displayed up to 14 days in advance and must be removed within 7 days after the event.

* The notice or sign must not exceed 0.6 of a square metre.

The full regulations, The Town and Country Planning (Control of Advertisements) (England) Regulations 2007, SI 2007/783, are at http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2007/783/contents/made. See Part 2 and Schedule 3. I don't think any of the subsequent amendments affect this class.

I went to Zippo's last year, first time since being a kid I've been to a circus.

There were some cringy bits but overall it was good fun and a bit of a laugh.

Less telly more circus IMO.

the guys in motorbikes in those huge steel spheres were amazing, the spoof film production by the clowns using mugs from the audience was funny, the ring leader who's been doing it for like 45 years was brilliant. loads of skills that require more than a quick thumb and an x-box.

having been last year I'll try and go every year.

I can see in a few years everyone pining for the days when there used to be circuses on the green every year and where are they now etc.

I agree with Kid Kruger; so long as there are no animals involved then it's good family fun, so turn off the TV and the Playstation and take the kids out. Yes the posters can be a bit irritating but only a bit and I think people are over-reacting. Let's keep it in perspective.

Agree

We went last year on a dull wet Monday night, it was well worth it. My 72 year old neighbour had been and told us YOU MUST GO and my kids still talk about it. One thing tho, don't buy your kids or partner a swirling illuminated windmill or sword, it's way too distracting.

It is meant to be slightly cheesy but it's amazingly skilful too. Mind you with Through the Keyhole and Surprise Surprise back on the box, my Cheese-O-Meter is way out of tune, so chill out there

They ride horses and dogs are involved, both mans best friend since time immemorial

If we don't have the circus coming to town then we've definitely lost something, it's a great tradition that adapts with time. Mind you, there's always some misery who'll not like it

Thankfully they stay safely tucked up behind a keyboard, making notes on which poster site upset them most

Long Live Zippo's

Well to be fair, what upset us was Zippo's poster minions taking our posters down (for an upcoming gig) and replacing ours with theirs.

As if they didn't have sufficient posters around the area already.

And as if we (well one of us, not me) didn't spend bloody hours each month trekking round ED and many other areas putting our posters up in friendly shop windows.

I'm sure it's not just us that this happens to. Why do Zippo's think their circus is so much more important than anybody else's events?

So rude of me, i'd overlooked your post Sue and mine wasn't directed at you

I get your point but I see the Zippo guys side too.

It's tough out there and they've got a finite amount of time, so it's a bit "who shouts loudest"

Aside of that, is The Goose your sole business or is it a paying hobby ?

Maybe you could do a Folk-Circus-Fusion thang with Zippo

I'd come see it for sure

East Dulwich 2013

A land where white middle class graffitti is welcomed with open arms by everyone ( look, look, see how ARTISTIC and OPEN MINDED we are, we love the EDGYNESS of orchestrated ART HAPPENINGS by HIPSTERS even though its like 10 years past its prime and is mostly SHITE) but a circus poster from a circus that has been around for the past decade, 2x a year on the rye, invokes such anger ( KILL the ANIMAL ABUSERS, KILL the CIRCUS FLY POSTER VERMIN, KILL THEM IN THE FACE )

"Maybe you could do a Folk-Circus-Fusion thang with Zippo"

..... genius Nettie

Ok they may have got too enthusiastic with the poster thing but if we can just put that to one side and consider offering some support. I'm all for a night out in my own post-code that is affordable with no taxi fares involved.

    • I'm not in a bubble - if you read my post it says supportive of food bank info and community group info etc on the ED station board, where broad mix pass by when using train/bus/on foot. You're judging me but I can assure you I probably do FAR more for the local community than someone like you who simply posts something unhelpful in response to a conversation piece, asking for more opinions. Of course I know not everyone is middle class, I am working class worked up to middle class etc etc. I support various local groups, raise money for charity, give money to charity, give to foodbanks... the whole shebang. All I am saying is that there are ALSO other people who are interested in looking at the noticeboard for small business info around the area. Small businesses definitely need support and often make low profits and rely on advertising in places like these noticeboards. I'm entitled to an opinion and I am very honest, unlike some who want to say the right thing but if you question yourself what do YOU actually do for the good of others? Yes you may be Mother Teresa but my guess is... you aren't 😉 It is now fixed...
    • I think there is possibly a “broken windows syndrome” to these kind of boards: you know the idea that a broken window left untouched will give the impression that nobody cares, so encourages more vandalism? If boards are not maintained and the notices are way out of date it gives off that vibe. North Cross Road is a Southwark council licensed market, so does it not have a council employee in charge of it? Someone who arranges pitches and payments etc. If so, surely they would be the person to take responsibility? It only needs somebody to keep it clean and charge the posters regularly. Perhaps this can be suggested to the Goose Green councillors; it’s not my ward.
    • Exactly. I complained about them being broken for around 2 YEARS and they were repaired autumn (?) last year but only today when I emailed the councillor did he say he had "just received keys". I have no objection to a mix of community groups etc using the board but surely it should be open to all? Including local businesses, many of whom rely on word of mouth or boards like this - they don't often make much profit so it's great to support local business owners. It's not really my own interest as I am not a business owner... I am just reflecting what I would like to see - that I admit - as per my original post. p.s. the noticeboards I am talking about are empty - not used by anyone as the councillor has the key! Watch my words. They will be updated yearly if that and the info will go out of date. Last time the Northcross Rd one ended up with local councillor contact details, community centre contacts (useful I agree) and random flyers. Someone broke the glass and that was it for several years until I constantly emailed and James Barber - wonderful former councillor for the area - proactively supported, and we now have it fixed and a new one near ED station...
    • Voluntary organisations are probably not making use of the boards any more because of the state they are in. To the best of my knowledge a small number of people had keys originally, but I have no idea who has them now. I imagine it is going to take a fair amount of time to get all this properly up and running again, and then properly maintained.
