Adventure bar - East Dulwich (Lounged when no longer about same)

Recommended Posts

Mockney, I'm no champagne snob (actually my current favourite bubbly is Chapel Down made in Kent, but that's a bit of a tangent) and I agree entirely that there are good proseccos out there (we drank a lot of it on our Sicilian honeymoon. Another tangent), but I don't think Adventure is using is one of them.

And there is something a bit daft about a whole page of cocktails headed "Champagne" in big shiny letters with a tiny note at the bottom saying *not made with champagne.

Hello everybody

I would like to thank everybody who has been in so far for their custom and those of you who like us, I'm glad we could be of service. I'd like to thank everybody for their comments as feedback is very important to us. We are also not niave enough to believe that we are for everybody. If everybody liked the same bars or if all bars were the same, going out would be dull. We have come to Lordship Lane to provide atmosphere and service different to what is already here.

On the subject of cocktails, we take our drinks very seriously. All of our bartenders are trained for weeks before they are allowed to make drinks behind our bars. For the comments about "watery" drinks, these are opinions which I respect. However, cocktails are not supposed to taste strong. They are supposed to taste nice. All of our cocktails have a good amount of alcohol in them. However some are short and some are long so each one will taste a different strength. If you like tasting your alcohol, I would recommend having a short drink where the mixers are less. If you speak to any of our staff, they will happily recommend something that they think you will like. We have developed a menu that I fully believe has 5-10 drinks for everybody. As people have different tastes however, these drinks will vary from person to person. If you are ever unhappy with your drink, speak to the manager and we will try to find a way of making you happy.

As for our champagne cocktails, this is a style of drink. The small print at the bottom of the page is a myth. Prosecco is listed as an ingredient of every drink. We don't try to hide the fact we use prosecco. As someone stated, good proseccos are better than cheap champagnes and that is the very reason we use it. Most cocktail bars that use champagne for their cocktails either use a poor champagne and charge ?7-8 or a decent champagne and charge anything from ?9-?15. We buy all of our stock from an independant Italian wholesaler who refuse to sell bad wine/prosecco as a principal. The proseccco we use is highly recommended by them and is their best selling sparkling bottle. We wouldn't use it otherwise, especially in the Porn Star martini where it is served on the side so you can tase it on it's own.

I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many great people in the bar so far. I am yet to speak to anyone who have admitted being a poster but I respect the anonymity. I would however be pleased to meet any of you in the bar and explain to you why we do things a certain way. Feel free to come by any time.

I look forward to seeing you,

Toby Jackson

Blimey - I thought you would have had a reply by now Toby

I have to take my hat off to you for wading through that many pages of often rancorous posts and still taking the time to address them - seriously, well done

I have been back in once or twice since the opening night and preferred it on those occassions - next time I will ask for you and say hi.

A quick reminder:

It's = It is

Its = possessive (as in "on its own")

This thread is enough to make Lynne Truss foam at the mouth.

Oh and I will certainly give Bar Hollyoaks a chance. How about a gay night? (Steeling myself for an onslaught)

With regard to apostrophes she is right, but she is very sloppy on other stuff (eg, starting sentences with conjunctions). That's fine in everyday use and particularly on a forum like this, but to use it in a grammar book is very irritating.

To save this from the lounge, well done Toby for responding.

I guess the problem with grammar rules is that usage is constantly evolving so you have to allow for this. Necessitating a degree of subjectivity. But I think we can all agree on where apostrophes ought and ought not to go (?) That isn't a grey area (except to the uninitiated).

I feel a bit sorry for Toby. But admire his chutzpah in the face of such negativity (including myself in the latter).

Local EA, I feel your pain! About to hit "The Wall" any second now.

I was surprised when my niece headed down there last night (Wednesday) - apparently not for the first time. She's off to Uni at the weekend to give you some idea of age group and has apparently, with her friends, taken to this new bar in a big way since it opened.

Being the wrong side of forty and therefore irredeemably stuck in my ways I haven't tried it yet myself. Respect to Toby though for responding in such a positive manner.

Look for the YMCA sign near Barclays!

Just to add though, I was there last week for the first time and quite enjoyed it. I didn't brave a cocktail (friends did and were satisfied), but the T&T (Tanqueray Tonic) I ordered was strong. Unfortunately no Hendrix or Aviator gin though. Toby - any chance you can at least stock Hendrix (and of course cucumber!)? ;)

Incredible what they have done with the space. I'll bet the previous owner of Inside 72 is kicking himself now.

wow, what alot of views and comments....

having just left the trade ( i sold my pub lease thank f*&k )i think toby is brave to stand up and be counted - its so easy to make snide remarks when you know very little about the trade - and a very hard one at that

most people think its a breeze running a good bar , that you can turn up at half 4 , get sozzled all eve with your customers and then do it all over again next day

think on. I was interested to see the manager of the bishop smugly 'interviewing' the adventure mananger... sussing him / the bar out...maybe scott ( the bald arrogant owner of bishop ) had sent him scuttling along to check out the competition ? seems the arrogance has rubbed off from the owner to the manager ( who was with a very very young lass - just finished at JAGS / Alleyns ?? ) and even to the small f/t bishop barman with a height issue.

i think the hoarding is a little w**k myself at adventure but who cares its not really a deal breaker

the bishop will need to pull its complacent socks up - it only works because of its location and ok ish food - albeit it pricey. I was going to take it on myself as i knew it was an easy patch the cash didnt come up in time..

good luck to adventure !!

    • There is a large amount fresh veg available in the green book cage outside the copleston church, sprouts, spring onions, potatoes, parsnips and bread rolls, pop down shame to see it get wasted
    • On the original topic - there was more of this on Whateley Road today. Same place but the other side of the road. Could be the same dogwalker as for the other nearby roads?   I don't have a dog - but would have thought it's hard for owners not to notice when a dog is doing it in the middle of a pavement?
    • Thought I’d take a trip down to Rye Lane this morning to visit the charity shops etc. I usually park in the Morrisons car park and buy stuff there and then the nearby shops. I know there are a few shops near the Aylesham centre that are having to close (Boots the chemist was a shoplifters favourite over the years) but I was shocked to see the extent of shop closures, graffiti, overall decline in the area.  Sometimes I get the bus and wanted to visit the Crises charity shop but it didn’t open until 10.30am and it had a coffee place inside. They have a shop in Rye Lane but are missing out on early rising customers. Walking down towards Santendar and the Primark store was very empty.Just hope that isn’t due for closure. The security guards are very nonchalant. The Scope charity shop has a prime position but doesn’t promote the shop Greggs have done away with their self service due to the number of thefts of food items.  The Poundland was quite empty too but I visit this one as they have stock since the Camberwell one closed down.
    • Maybe I'm behind the times, but in the old days if you went to a pub for charity fundraiser you'd have a quiz or karaoke and you'd be chipping in for a new scanner at your local hospital or maybe sending some poor kiddie for some cancer treatment abroad. Nowadays you can roll down to the Old Nun's head in Nunhead and tip your money into a bucket for some sad young woman to go a private surgeon and have her breasts sliced off -  as if that was going to be some kind of life-saving treatment!  Not only that, she's publicising her Valentine's crowdfunder with a funny ha ha (not) cartoon of a girl (see pic) with a hypodermic in her bum and calling it 'Valen-Tits-off'. Jesus wept. Whatever happened to hearts and flowers? It's so unbelievably sick. I'm a woman, I've pretty much still got all the woman-bits intact. Periods and puberty weren't much fun, I was bullied at school, wondered about my sexuality and boys and spots and the rest of it, got called a lezzer by the class cow, but I got through it. And I would no more think that cutting bits off a girl was the solution to her misery than I would put my teenage daughter on a diet if she was diagnosed with anorexia. I can't be the only person who finds the pub - and its publicity material - very VERY offensive?
