Adventure bar - East Dulwich (Lounged when no longer about same)

Recommended Posts

Kidda.. you seem to have a bee in your bonnet about the forum and it's -ites rather than their views on the Adventure Bar. A little angry almost? Explain?

I went to Adventure Bar last night. I say well done to them for taking on a big project and attempting to expand their portfolio. Unfortunately they fail to deliver in almost every way. They pertain to be a friendly bunch but last night I asked on the 2 for 1 if I may have a slightly different mojito from Mrs Benjaminty. "No go" apparently ... I have to buy 2 of each. (Lucky I didn't) so I pay the higher price. I actually don't give a sh1te about 2 for 1 at all ... but for a new business that is looking to provide good "service" ... it was hardly a good response.

Anyway sorry back to my mojito. I like watching mojitos being made. I can pretty much tell whether it's going to taste as it should just from watching it being made. Now when I see "Hi how was your day" barman pour rum in at the SAME TIME as the lime and of equal measures... I'm already looking to walk but Mrs B says to stick with it. So now it has ice in it and it's half full of liquid... NOW FOR HALF A GLASS OF SODA! WTF is he doing to my drink? Then I wait for the bit of mint and for him to spank it and place it in the top of my glass for that lovely minty scent as the glass comes to my mouth - oh.... apparently not.

I have to be honest and say I don't really like Liquorish ... or rather I prefer to drink elsewhere but I decided to see if all of LL made this new version of a Mojito. Thankfully no .... I was almost impressed with Liquorish. I actually had 2! And the proof is in the pudding - I feel mildly sh1tty today! A good sign I think.

I didn't bother drinking much of my Adventure Mojito - I've had morning breath with more alcohol content than that (sorry for the detail).

I'd would have loved YMCA .. (ooops sorry) Adventure Bar to be a good'un but it's totally soulless.. it really is.

Having said that - Great toilets!

As a point of reference on how a mojito should be made and taste - check out Mango Landin in Brixton! Bravo Mango Landin!

So are Adventure Bar really rubbing their hands with glee as I write this?

kidda, I wasn't going to get back into this, but since you've directly quoted one of my posts, and since I'm unbleievably bored today, I will.

First, if you're going to quote posts then at least read them properly first. What I said was that I doubt Toby is sitting in a darkened room drinking gin. In other words I was saying the same thing you were, that I don't see any reason why Toby would care what's said on here as long as his bar is full.

As for the rest of what you've said, well, I can be cantankerous when I'm in the mood and I am sometimes a killjoy and I'm definitely not a "flashkid", but I don't think that has anything to do with why I don't like this particular bar. I don't hate Adventure. I didn't go there determined to hate it and I don't resent it. I just happened not to like it very much.

That's allowed isn't it?

Or are you really saying that we all have to like the same things?

Ok, so assuming I'm allowed my opinion; I don't like the bar and so probably won't go there again, but as I've already said I respect that lots of people do and it will probably remain full and popular.

As it happens I've only been to Liquorish a handful of times and never much liked it, but the night I tried Adventure I also thought I'd give Liquorish another try (under the terrible influence of certain other forumites who wanted a nightcap).

In Adventure I had a "Grande Champagne" - listed as their alternative to a Champagne Classic. It was prosecco (there's a small note at the bottom of the "Champagne" cocktail page that says that all the cocktails are made with prosecco) with a spoonful of white sugar (no sugar cubes on opening night) and a splash of Cherry liquor. It was barely fizzy, sickly sweet and mostly tasted like Tizer. In Liquorish, for a whole 50p more, I had a delcious Champange Classic, made with champange. So, whilst I'm not saying I love Liquorish and I'll always go there, in that fairly direct comparison Liquorish did a lot better.

Feel free to have a drink to the EDF when you're next there, or better still come to the Duke tomorrow night and have a drink with some of the EDF, you might be pleasantly surprised...

and mostly tasted like Tizer.

Is that what that was? When I tried it, I honestly honestly thought you'd just ordered a Rose or something. I remember thinking Anna could have tried a cocktail being that it's a cocktail bar. Feckin hell now I know what it was meant to have been, it was even more shite!

I still intend to pop in here again though, don't think a place can be judged on opening night...

Note to Kidda, you obviously love this place loads, and I'm sure you have absolutely no personal interest at all... (:-S) but there is no need to go slating people because they don't like a feckin bar. Most of the bars in Dulwich are shite in my opinion (at least they are at weekends), but loads would disagree with me!

PS. I agree with you about liqourish.

kidda - you really do seem to be taking a personal view on these comments. You clearly feel strongly about this, since you have only posted on this thread since joining EDF.

I have still yet to visit the bar, but will reserve judgement until I do. However, it's not looking hopeful for my Mohjto based on previous comments!

Maybe a trip after the drinks tomorrow!? Anyone else up for giving it a(nother) go?

Oh, how disappointing kidda that your post wasn't aimed at me.

I was feeling quite cantankerous and hoping for a good forum fight to lift a very dull day*

I suppose the forum can come across as a bit self important. I think it's partly that people can be quite frank in their opinions (that whole safety of anonimity thing), partly because it feels like such a community that you can forget that not everyone is on here and partly, as has been discussed countless times, because written word is so easily misinterpreted** so people get offended more easily and discussions become more heated.

And after that, surely the longest sentence posted for some time, I'd better get back to my dull day.

*this is a joke

**see above example of potentially misunderstandable comment.

If they are anything like the mojitos Asset you'll be very disappointed I'm afraid! I think this place will survive if they aim for the young 'uns, but they seriously need to sort this weak drink malarkey out as people won't be taken the pee out of for too long.

until i went there, i had no idea who any of the staff were, but when you go somewhere and staff are friendly and welcoming, then that is a good thing - Surely?

I love the negativity on here, and im sure the adventure bar owners do follow this thread, for the sole reason of relief!! The relief that you whinging, moaning people wont be going there again!!!

Its fair to comment on absolutely anything that one wants to.

I just cant get my head around the fact, that those who despise the place so much keep going on and making it out to be the worst thing ever!!

What would these people rather another empty shop front with smoked out windows with crappy fair ground posters all over it!

Why not give those moving to the area for business a fair chance and let individuals make there own minds up, rather than others trying to make it up for them!!

I said I'll try it again, but maybe I shouldn't as the defenders of the Adventure bar just seem to have a go at those of us who have tried it and didn't like everything about it 100% the first time. Do you mind if we give it another go?

[edited once]

I personally said it wasn't my cup of tea but good luck to them. I also think that MOST people put their honest opinions on here without witch picking. You will always get people who seem to be abit too harsh but there seem to be quite a few forumites that turned up to give it a fair crack of the whip but unfortunately a fair few didn't rate it too highly!! As I said earlier I believe the early to late twenties will be their main market but they won't be able to keep them if they take the piss with the drinks being watered down.

My comments not aimed at everyone, as those who give it another go - Cool, go for it.

I know everyone has there views, and thats whats makes the EDF fun, and a good way to get through there afternoons!

If everyone agreed, it would be fairly boring?!

    • Does anyone know when the next SNT meeting is? I am fed up with my son being mugged on East Dulwich Grove!
    • The issue must be everywhere at the moment. I was visiting a friend last week in Bermondsey, think we were walking  down Linton Rd & we dodged 7 dog poos. It was disgusting.
    • Thanks for your message — I actually took the time to look into what CityHive does before posting my original comment, and I’d encourage anyone with questions to do the same. Yes, the Companies House filings are overdue — but from what I’ve gathered, this seems likely to be an accountant or admin issue, not some sign of ill intent. A lot of small, community-based organisations face challenges keeping up with formalities, especially when they’re focused on immediate needs like food distribution. Let’s not forget CityHive is a not-for-profit, volunteer-powered CIC — not a corporate machine. As for the directors, people stepping down or being replaced is often about capacity or commitment — which is completely normal in the voluntary and community sector. New directors are sometimes appointed when others can no longer give the time. It doesn’t automatically mean bad governance — it just means people’s circumstances change. CityHive’s actual work speaks volumes. They buy most of the food they distribute — fresh produce, essential groceries, and shelf-stable items — and then deliver it to food banks, soup kitchens, and community projects across London. The food doesn’t stay with CityHive — it goes out to local food hubs, and from there, directly to people who need it most. And while yes, there may be a few paid staff handling logistics or admin, there’s a huge volunteer effort behind the scenes that often goes unseen. Regular people giving their time to drive vans, sort donations, load pallets, pack food parcels — that’s what keeps things running. And when people don’t volunteer? Those same tasks still need to be done — which means they have to be paid for. Otherwise, the whole thing grinds to a halt. As the need grows, organisations like CityHive will inevitably need more support — both in people and funding. But the bigger issue here isn’t one small CIC trying to make ends meet. The real issue is the society we live in — and a government that isn’t playing its part in eradicating poverty. If it were, organisations like CityHive, The Felix Project, City Harvest, FareShare, and the Trussell Trust wouldn’t need to exist, let alone be thriving. They thrive because the need is growing. That’s not a reflection on them — it’s a reflection on a broken system that allows people to go hungry in one of the richest cities in the world. If you're in doubt about what they’re doing, go check their Instagram: @cityhivemedia. You’ll see the real organisations and people receiving food, sharing thanks, and showing how far the impact reaches. Even Southwark Foodbank has received food from CityHive — that alone should speak volumes. So again — how does any of this harm you personally? Why spend time trying to discredit a group trying to support those who are falling through the cracks? We need more people lifting others up — not adding weight to those already carrying the load.
    • Well, this is very disappointing. Malabar Feast  has changed its menu again. The delicious fish curry with sea bass no longer exists. There is now a fish dish with raw mango, which doesn't appeal. I had dal and spinach instead, which was bland (which I suppose I could/should have predicted). One of my visitors had a "vegetable Biriani" which contained hardly any vegetables. Along with it came two extremely tiny pieces of poppadom in a large paper bag.   This was embarrassing, as I had been singing Malabar's praises and recommending we ordered from there. The other mains and the parathas were OK, but I doubt we will be ordering from there again. My granddaughters wisely opted for Yard Sale pizzas, which were fine. Has anybody else had a similar recent poor (or indeed good!)  experience at Malabar Feast?
