PeckhamRose
This looks soon to be ready. There appears to be a crane situation with a cover over it, like it is going to be officially unveiled. Anyone know anything about this? I'd love to be there! lizbells6
According to an earlier post, it was funded by Southwark from their Cleaner Greener Safer fund after an application from a local resident. No info about the selection process for the artist and design though. Wood has it's own quirks and I would think it would be difficult to predict exactly how long it would take to transform it before you started working with it. My advice would be to be patient and look forward to the artist creating something interesting out of what was a horrid old stump. PeckhamRose
Alice I have PMd you some information.Do you not think it a GOOD thing that Cleaner Greener Safer money goes to artists? If you checked information before coming out with negative stuff first, you'd see that people applying for CGS money have to fill out quite a detailed form. I won some money for my local area ages ago. So I know. And yes, the work has gone on for longer than the artist originally stated it might, earlier, but he also stated that all the nails in the wood kept blunting his tools. And it is indeed very difficult to judge how long art is going to take, plus we do not know the personal circumstances of the artist concerned. I look forward to the unveiling! lizbells6
Tallulah, I'm not against the CGS funding public art at all, I was wondering how it gets chosen. I'm sure lots of artists would like to have their work on show at such a busy location so there should be a transparent selection process to avoid suggestions of "commissions for mates". Maybe there is- I looked on the Southwark website but perhaps I missed it.And I don't think it was unreasonable to mention it has overrun, even allowing for nails and the fact that it is art. How do artists cost their work if they don't know roughly how long it will take? tallulah71
Fair enough...just seemed a rather unnecessarily negative comment on what was a really upbeat and positive post. No harm intended. PeckhamRose
alice has cut and pasted a private message she sent me, above.I have sent her the link to the CGS page on southwark council's website. The application time is now up for this round.Again, the negativity is so sad. And meanwhile back to my opening post, I wonder when the tree carving will be unveiled! PokerTime
The CGS is a very transparent process. Anyone can apply. Shortlisted candidates are announced publically at community council meetings which ANY member of the public can go to. Shortlisted candidates are invited to perform a public presentation to councillors, who then make a final decision on which applications recieve money. In the application, all projects have to make the case for who will benefit from the project. Money awarded is not simply handed over either. Where contractors are required, the council organises and pays for that directly. Everything is properly audited. No mystery, no conspiracy. LadyDeliah
Some people just need something to complain about. If your life is so miserable you feel the need to moan about petty things, I suggest you take up a hobby or make an effort to get more sex, even with yourself. Always seems to transform the miserable barstewards I know.If no-one wants sex with you, there are lots of independent escorts and masseurs who cater for males & females of every predilection advertising on the internet and countless swinging clubs. Things have taken longer than expected and is the only project of this type hes working on. Some aspects are weather dependant, so has slowed things down at times, but he is there at all hours come rain or shine to get it completed asap. There is a hard deadline of late Feb, so not long now. Some additions to the project requiring extra material and heavy moving gear is also required, which all adds to the fun. It will be a striking object, whether you like it or not is of course down to personal taste. Whatever your thoughts, i do think it will become a strong landmark for the area and its influence on the community will only be understood in the years to come. There are other aspects to it which i cant go into yet, but i can tell you the cost of the project is a lot less than you might imagine, and infact has cost Morganico more money to complete than CGS are paying. Will update with more when we know the unveiling date, which is decided by the council. Really looking forward to seeing it finished. Keep going by on foot/on the bus with my kids and we get tantalising glimpses of it. I can imagine it's cost a lot to do - time/resource. Looking forward to the unveiling.
