Mastertekhelp - Custom computers

Greetings all,

I have recently constructed my own service pitch based on how I have actively been able to help family members and friends. In a nutshell: I'd love to be able to give specialist advice to those who want to buy computers as well offer the service to build a custom made computer. I am highly experienced with computer building, part finding and troubleshooting; additionally I have personally built a number of computers for family and friends.

Please note, as reference to the forum rules, that I am based in East Dulwich just nearby to Lordship Lane.

What is the problem? When buying a computer, you often need to spend a lot of time thinking about what you want to use it for and whether the specifications will be up to your standards. Most people may not understand how each component within a computer works or what different parts do what, and let's face it, if you want to invest in a computer for the long term, you want to make sure everything is 100% right!

Buying a pre-built desktop computer from stores isn't a problem at all. The only issue is that that most of the time the quality of parts used is more or less substandard, truth be told each computer part has an endless range of manufacturers to pick from, usually the pre-built desktops have the lower end of hardware only to save costs.

Why do quality parts matter? Performance, reliability and efficiency, in that order. Without going into too many details with technical jargon, high-quality parts that are trusted among the computer building community will most definitely give you the best value for money overall as well as the best performance. With these tried and true computer parts you can forget about hardware failing on you and having to deal with companies to get such things replaced all the time.

Believe it or not, there is one computer component that should NEVER be compromised on for safety reasons above all. This part in particular is the power supply; I would be willing to guarantee that 99% of computers in store use a low cost, low quality power supply. The power supply is the soul of the computer, it is the reason the computer works, a low quality one could be a significant safety hazard.

What can be done? Well I'd like to be able to offer my expertise on what to buy as well as a service to construct a custom computer based on your own preferences. These preferences can simply be whether you just want to watch movies, browse the internet, play games, use it for work or all of the above.

There are sites which allow you to construct a pseudo-customized computers but these do not go into any detail on what should be purchased for your needs, they do not give any guidance or advice at all. The other major problem with these sites is that they do not list even 1% of manufacturers that you can buy from for each part, everything is rather vague so you wouldn't be too sure what you are getting. I'd love to be able to completely eliminate this ambiguity and just tell people what does what, what to buy as well as what would be recommended for best reliability and performance.

If you would like some advice or some idea of what a custom computer might involve, please contact me with a rough price range you would like to stick to and what you would like the computer to be aimed towards, such as gaming, work or anything else.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask. I hope I have not written too much!

  • 4 weeks later...

I recently had a custom computer built by Abdul. I was looking for a fairly cheap computer between 300-500 pounds that I could use for my business.

The computer cost me less than half of what something in PC world would have been with more or less the same specs. I had a flash drive installed, and I must say that my computer loads everything up in less than a few seconds, people really don't tell you about this kind of stuff!

I am well happy with the advice given on what quality parts were used and all questions I had were answered promptly.

Highly recommended.

    • The current wave of xenophobia is due to powerful/influential people stirring up hatred.  It;'s what happened in the past, think 1930s Germany.  It seems to be even easier now as so many get their information from social media, whether it is right or wrong.  The media seeking so called balance will bring some nutter on, they don't then bring a nutter on to counteract that. They now seem to turn to Reform at the first opportunity. So your life is 'shite', let;s blame someone else.  Whilst sounding a bit like a Tory, taking some ownership/personal responsibility would be a start.  There are some situations where that may be more challenging, in deindustrialised 'left behind' wasteland we can't all get on our bikes and find work.  But I loathe how it is now popular to blame those of us from relatively modest backgrounds, like me, who did see education and knowledge as a way to self improve. Now we are seen by some as smug liberals......
    • Kwik Fit buggered up an A/C leak diagnosis for me (saying there wasn't one, when there was) and sold a regas. The vehicle had to be taken to an A/C specialist for condensor replacement and a further regas. Not impressed.
    • Yes, these are all good points. I agree with you, that division has led us down dangerous paths in the past. And I deplore any kind of racism (as I think you probably know).  But I feel that a lot of the current wave of xenophobia we're witnessing is actually more about a general malaise and discontent. I know non-white people around here who are surprisingly vocal about immigrants - legal or otherwise. I think this feeling transcends skin colour for a lot of people and isn't as simple as, say, the Jew hatred of the 1930s or the Irish and Black racism that we saw laterally. I think people feel ignored and looked down upon.  What you don't realise, Sephiroth, is that I actually agree with a lot of what you're saying. I just think that looking down on people because of their voting history and opinions is self-defeating. And that's where Labour's getting it wrong and Reform is reaping the rewards.
    • @Sephiroth you made some interesting points on the economy, on the Lammy thread. Thought it worth broadening the discussion. Reeves (irrespective of her financial competence) clearly was too downbeat on things when Labour came into power. But could there have been more honesty on the liklihood of taxes going up (which they have done, and will do in any case due to the freezing of personal allowances).  It may have been a silly commitment not to do this, but were you damned if you do and damned if you don't?
