Hmmm... there's two ways of looking at this. The further gentrification of Brixton continues afoot with yet another chain. Brady's bar seems to have been shut forever and it's good that something is finally happening with that little spot but Wahaca? Hmmm... Mixed feelings.
Is Wahaca really that bad? Only ten years ago, Mexican food in London basically meant a plate of melted cheese with some salsa on the side. Wahaca raised the bar - but of course it's not really possible to maintain the quality while expanding at such a rate...

Dos Amigos springs to mind.

Because Lambeth have subsidised the Brady's site - where Wahaca will move to - and have received grants to maintain it as a community asset which will now be scrapped perhaps? For 15 years they've been promising its use as a community space, and lots of people's time and efforts have gone into that.

Brady's even had visits from Prince Charles as part of his urban regen crusade, so it's not as if the Brady's project was pie in the sky idealism!

The latest leaseholder inside the granville arcade had to pay a ?50k lease premium to secure their shop - it's not really the spacemakers / cost effective start ups for local people it was first intended to be is it?

As for the Wahaca food, aside from your strawman argument - you get better from the Colombian shops and delis round the corner.

You've clearly never been to Wahaca.

Looking at their website the prices would be far too cheap for E.D.

They would have to Triple their prices if they set up shop here.

Otherwise no one would go there.

I mean.. Sparkling water 750ml ?1.50 Needs to be ?4.50.

I mean would anyone admit to going to a place where the water was only ?1.50.

How embarrassing would that be. No Street-cred there.

This could never happen in Peckham.
