Gigs / Local Bands

It would depend on specific gig, how well they know you, and so on. Bingo is on a Saturday and the members like to use the hall. Janice is the events person. Club is fairly new to booking external groups - so its working out what works best for everyone. They are trying to formulate proper booking arrangements - and also to make sure that we know who is booking, how late they want to go on, and so on so that charging can be done appropriately. We also want to get good relationships with those booking, and these will grow - especially if we can get groups in who are well organised with good security and people management and so on; which we really welcome. Every arrangement we make at the moment is new - so they are all negotiatied case by case with Janice and Charles the president.

The club is all about local community - and not just music - so variety is definitely what's needed

We've had some great things happen and so far most involved have been happy.

That's weird, because all our regular gigs are on a Friday night.

We were looking for a regular monthly concert venue, before The Ivy House reincarnated, and we went to the Liberal Club and really liked the space, which would have been ideal for us.

Maybe they just didn't like the look of us! :( We liked them! :(

We were definitely told they had bingo on a Friday night and wouldn't change the night ....

We have an excellent reputation with agents, artists, venues and audiences re our organisation/management of gigs ... we could have given them references!

Water under the bridge now, as our concerts are at The Ivy House and we don't intend to move them unless they chuck us out! :))

(Next one is John Otway on 31 January - tickets selling fast but still some left if anybody wants to see a truly manic performance from a legendary two-hit wonder :)) )

I saw Wild Willy Barrett playing in the back room of a bar a couple of years back. He played for six hours and then at two in the morning apologised because he'd run out of songs.

It was brilliant

He said he was off abroad for a while.

I believe he's living in France. Otherwise we'd have had him as well.

Next time, eh (it won't be a six hour set, though :)) )

We've got Reg Meuross coming to The Old Nun's Head tonight, in the room upstairs.

He's a fantastic singer-songwriter, and he's just won a FATEA award for Best Male Vocalist 2013.

Details in the "What's On" section.

ETA: Was a great night! Sold out! We hope to book him for The Ivy House in the future - larger venue :)

Grumpy landlord though, unless he's recently changed :))

Who voted it 3rd best venue, and why? I've been there a few times and didn't think it was that great.

It is a great venue - because of the bands they've had on, not because of the place itself. Which has improved in recent years, but is still a bit 'rustic' with an awkward layout.

I've seen some really memorable gigs there... Boards of Canada, Shonen Knife (set of Ramones covers), J Church, Frank Turner.. even played there a few times myself over the years. There really are surprisingly few established venues in London for underground or up-and-coming bands.

Heard some stories about the landlord, but never met him or experienced his moodiness first hand.

Ah, OK, if because of the bands that makes sense - though depends what you like of course.

Very small stage, though, IIRC? Though it's a few years since I've been there.

Glad it wasn't just me the landlord had a go at :))

No idea. I was there as a punter, not a promoter.

Wouldn't want to deal with him if I was trying to put on a gig there, though :))

The landloard understandably took exception when a member of a band called The Tuts brought their own bottle of vodka to drink on stage. But he handled it badly and tried to physically eject her, which obviously didn't go down well.

I don't think the stage is that small, I've played on there as part of a seven piece and it was OK.

    • Week 11 points...   Week 11 table...   Almost a third of the way through the season and RC is comfortably holding onto his early lead, and also flying the flag for the EDF with 10th place overall, 11 points behind the leaders. 👏 Another international break, back in just over a weeks time...
    • Never had a problem with the discount being applied with a "club" loyalty card, so Tesco and Sainsburys have been fine, however in Morrisons a reduced price advertised on the item, took a photo just in case, at checkout charged full price even though photo shown as evidence. Some dodgy practices being undertaken.
    • Hi everyone. My name is Joe and I'm hoping to launch a Coffee Bike business in East Dulwich in the next few weeks. One of the last things I'm really struggling with is securing overnight storage for the bike. It's very heavy to ride and I'm unable to store it at home, so it needs to be somewhere in East Dulwich. I've tried a few businesses to see if they have anything but no luck. Dulwich Storage on Lordship lane are not taking any new bookings at the moment.  If anyone has any ideas or can help I would be really grateful.  Many thanks in advance. Joe
