For the record I went to a Catholic high school, was brought up CoE. To be fair, it was never forced upon anyone at our school, no matter what race or religion you were.

I can remember being shown a Turin Shroud mirace documentary. How I laughed when they accurately carbon dated it.

My RE teacher also believed men were on the earth at the same time as dinosaurs. I think he'd seen one too many Doug McClure Land that time forget adventuress.

Anywway, it was all quite a fluffy cucumber sandwich, tea and easter bonnet type approach. There was no evangelical right and christian fundamentalists weren't yet attacking doctors and scientists.

NB emphasis on the mental in fundamental

Most faith schools don't teach creationism, this one seems to be a fundamentalist extreme. Why would anyone send their children to a school which doesn't give them recognisable qualifications? Very odd.

May I timidly ask that people refrain from calling Christianity a barbaric and irrational cult, and other such names? I don't want to seem as though I'm trying to censor comment, and of course if you feel strongly then you should say whatever you wish, but it is quite offensive and perhaps unnecessarily so? There are barbaric and horrible Christians - the homophobic ones prominent among them - but please don't tar us all with the same brush.

* although to be fair the Bible is a BIT barbraic and irrational *

* don't hate me *

I wouldn't call the Christians I know barbaric. Some of them are looooovely. But I'm not sure Christianity would have survived to the 21st century had it not... erm.. cleaned up it's act a little?

Sean, if you're trying to bait me, it's working. Of course the Bible is barbaric in parts, it was written thousands of years ago in a very different culture. Christianity is about living like Christ (or trying to), and naturally it has to change with the times, while trying to remain true to that central principle.

Not all Christians agree with what I've just said, but many Christians unfortunately are less than Christ-like in my view.

Oops, less polite that time.

Wot exactly is the problem here? Are parents being MADE to send their kids to this school? Is anything being forced on ppl outside the school?

Yes you may not agree wiv it's teachings but it doesn't effect you unless you already have ur child at the school or intend on sending them there. Maybe I, as young person who is yet to experience parenthood, should tell you (those expressing their views strongly against this school) how to bring your children up while we're here.

I personally have no support for such a place but I respect the concept of each to their own.

There are many other more important things to express ones opinions on in the world...

And as KB has already pointed out this school isn't a new "creation" (sorry for the pun!)

edited coz me brain works quicker than me fingers*

James, no worries - I can completely understand your anger, and I agree that it's horrible. Religion certainly has quite a past and sadly a present to answer for.

Sean, you were being a bugger and trying to bait me to see what would happen, admit it.

Keef and muffintop, thank you for being so nice. I'm not embarrassed to admit it! I just don't go around with a tambourine...

So if a faith school were teaching that all kuffar were fair game in jihad that shouldn't concern me because my kids don't go there?

I know I'm exaggerating for effect, but it was a trite point KK.

I do recall a time when I was at school where it was compulsory by law to learn a bunch of stuff about burning bushes and parting seas, and singing christian songs every morning, and that was an absolutely normal state school. (though the singing bit was quietly dropped in about 1985 at my school..shhhhh)

If a school is continuing that in this day and age it's hardly earth shaking stuff. Plus I never believed half of what my teachers said anyway, I was too busy jumping off a cliff cos my mate said so ;-)

*and I'm aware there are only 8 muslim faith schools in the country and they're all jolly nice places, just being facetious really, though it wasn't really very funny thinking about it.....I'll get my coat

didn't you just describe this new school (presumably because of their beliefs) as "a bit mental" - aren't you scoffing?

Who gets to choose the supernatural belief where the scoffing is allowed to begin?

Righto admin....

Should residents of East Dulwich object to such a school being in their neighbourhood given it's radical opinions on various topics? Given the large number of devout Christians of various denominations (some more, and I choose my words carefully, radical than others) up the road in Peckham should they have schools provided for them. It's private so no state funding is being given to it. Horses for courses?

Blinder you're right about me calling it a bit mental, I was talking about teaching creation in biblical terms despite scientific proof. I think most christians in EAST DULWICH (see what I did there) would feel that is wrong. It's the almost pitying looks you get that I am talking about. For the record I don't call myself christian anymore, but that is at least in part because of me being scared what my friends might say.

[slightly off-topic but only to clarify]

I don't think I scoffed at moos Keef. I think I called the Christians I know looovely

I don't think I was baiting you either moos - I'm aware a number of people on here have faith and that's fine

It was just that to pull someone up on calling the Christian Church barbaric isn't totally fair. The palms of my hands and the cheeks of my arse have suffered barbarism a-plenty in the name of Christian teaching. And judging by the skeletons coming out of the closet of the Catholic church in Ireland I was a lucky one. There are further examples galore should anyone want ot discuss

That's why I made the distinction between Christians and Christianity in my post - not to bait, or try and be "clever"

[back on-topic]

Would I object to the school opening? Can't see how I could do anything to stop it. As blinder says, where do you draw the line?

Keef: isn't that what Tony Blair said ;-)

Like I say I know plenty of people in the area who are Christians, and to my knowledge I get on fine with them. I was just defending someone who got pulled up a bit unfairly

(and it was James for cryin out loud - I normally argue with HIM and agree with moos!!)
