NOTE the new ride info here is for the Easter weekend, April 19th and 21st.
Over the Easter weekend we have 3 rides. On Saturday 19th we will have our usual long and short rides. Long ride from Cutty Sark to Wanstead Park and shorter new ride from London Bridge to Hyde Park via the Artists Garden, On Easter Monday, 21st April, Werner will lead a very long ride to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the modern Borough of Southwark.
Start 9.30am at Cutty Sark, next to the tunnel entrance. NOTE EARLY START. Hope to finish back at Greenwich at 1.30, but with uncertainties on a long ride please allow for possible 2pm finish. Route out: round Thames path to London Cable Car across river. Note this means we cannot have e-bikes on this ride, sorry. From Victoria Dock on to Beckton Corridor off road path and round past Beckton Alps, bit of cycle path and back streets to Wanstead Park. See if we can find the famed bluebells. Return across Wanstead Flats, quiet streets to Olympic Park, Hertford Union Canal, Regents Canal Towpath/Mile End Park, west side of Isle of Dogs to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. If the lifts are working, complete ride by crossing to the Cutty Sark. If not, end the ride at the tunnel.  Riders who wish to cross will be guided to Mudchute DLR Station where there is step free access. There is also step free access at Greenwich DLR station. Note this is a long route with a lot of continuous riding. We will be at our usual easy pace, but probably cycling for 3 hours +. You get a rest on the Cable Car (remember to bring some way of paying the fare) and a coffee break. Nevertheless worth bringing a snack and a drink. Ride Leader – Amanda.
19th April, Ride 2. Canada Water to Hyde Park via the Artists’ Garden < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-bridge-to-hyde-park-via-the-artists-garden-tickets-1320481438529 >
A fairly easy, flat ride from Canada Water (Deal Porter Square) to Hyde Park, crossing both Tower Bridge and Westminster Bridge. There are only 2 planned stops: at the Artists’ Garden near Temple and a coffee stop at the Park Sports Cafe in Hyde Park. If we’re quick, we might be able to include a short detour to the Graffiti tunnel near Waterloo, but that will be dependent on time. We should be able to complete the 24km round trip in about 2.5 hours. In order to avoid too much hassle with tourists visiting central London over Easter, we will have an early start at 9.30 am.  The planned route is:https://www.komoot.com/tour/2130788567?share_token=am1yUJ9Kh5dtXAyZ7iYAPQDgWSnW3K89az9KBpUVxuvIGmTtxv&ref=wtd
21st April, Easter Monday. Beating the Bounds for Southwark’s 50th Anniversary.  < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/beating-the-bounds-southwarks-50th-anniversary-tickets-1320494327079 >
Southwark Council, formed as part of the 1970s local government reorganisation, came into being at Easter 1975. Love them or loathe them it is still an excuse for a bike ride! Werner likes anniversaries so has planned, and will lead, a ride that follows the borough boundary as closely as possible. Start 9am, Southwark Needle, London Bridge. An anticlockwise route takes us first to the Lambeth boundary for a long stetch finishing at the top of Gipsy Hill where we meet Bromley and Croydon. Turn along Crystal Palace Parade where we soon meet Lewisham. We then follow the Lewisham boundary back to the Thames at St Georges Square, just east of South Dock. Follow the river, also of course the boundary, back to London Bridge. We expect to finish at around 1pm after covering about 30km.
Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.
This ride is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/

Note. Ride reports, often with photos and route maps, are posted to the Southwark Cyclists web site, yearly index at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/Future/provisional ride ideas can be viewed on our planning spreadsheet.

    • Earlier tonight, around 10pm (Monday 22 April), I saw a bright, small fireball come straight down from the sky and seemingly land in the near distance. I’d estimate it landed somewhere around Beauval Road/Lordship Lane/Goodrich/Landcroft Rd or thereabouts.  Googling meteorites I also discovered tonight was due to be the height of the Lyrid meteor shower over UK. Did anyone else see anything/capture it on door cams/ dash cams? Or better still find the meterorite?!
