Anyone know what's going on with Il Mirto on Melbourne Grove?

Not sure if they are redecorating or closed down as the dining area is being ripped out. I've only passed in the evening when no one is around so haven't been able to ask.

Marked on google as being permanently closed, probably another victim of the very difficult economy.

It was always quite a strange place in some ways,  though the food was usually very good.

Although......

We ate there fairly recently. We had been headed to Chern Thai, but they were closed

It was the night  after Valentine's day,  and Il Mirto were still offering a special menu.

One of the items  was a gorgonzola pasta dish. I really like gorgonzola, so I ordered it.

However it was really bland (though a massive portion) and there was no discernable taste of gorgonzola.

When I queried this, the chef said he had put a lot of gorgonzola in.

Further discussion ascertained that he had used  the mild kind of gorgonzola (aka to me as the completely pointless tasteless kind) , not the piccante, as "some people don't like the taste of gorgonzola."

Erm. Why would someone who didn't like gorgonzola order a dish whose USP was gorgonzola in the first place?

I didn't pursue it further, but it was an extremely disappointing meal from my point of view

We just paid up and left.

ETA: Il Mirto opened a second place in Nunhead Lane, didn't they, a long time ago? On the stretch between the Rye and The Old Nun's Head.

It didn't last long, if memory serves. It seemed an odd place to open a restaurant at the time, though there used to be a pub there, I can't remember its name

Does anybody else remember this?

That could be good esp if at least some of the chickens are free range, and come with salads, not just chips.

Il Mirto was cash only for a long time, wasn't it?

The Thai Corner Cafe  in North Cross Road still is cash only!

I didn't think rotisserie chicken places still existed 😮

    • "Wouldn't it make more sense to ask the guy who posted the rumours for the source of the information?" - perhaps, probably, you might be right. "But renovating the Grove would be even bigger because it's totally wrecked, and there's a shortage of skilled labour and much more expensive materials now..." - yeah, but all of this was also true 12 years ago - imagine how much more the building is wrecked by now and how much more expensive materials are - and how very little skilled labour is available in England now 🤔
    • Please be aware and careful! We recently had a report come in about parking scams. Criminals are sticking fake QR codes (circled in red) on the parking signs around car parks, this results on people not paying for parking and receiving fines. Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) have been going around and removing the stickers however, if spotted please remove them to help prevent others falling victim. If possible, try to avoid paying through scanning a QR code instead try other means such as through the app.
    • There is a distressed dog in a back garden accessible via side return on the upper end of Oakhurst Grove.  He barks for most of the day. First noticed several months ago and then stopped. Has started again over the last couple of weeks.   Last time, myself and several neighbours and passers-by went back to him and gave him water and food. He was on his own in the back garden. House was empty.    Does anyone know what’s going on?     Any advice?
    • @Andy Simmons as the area Labour councilor of many years, can you please provide an update on the Grove Tavern situation? A real eye sore, left abandoned for many years - there should've been a block of flats, new park or a shop built in its place by now. Labour seems to be bent on destroying whatever little green space is left in the country - why not to use places like this instead to build on?
