Marked on google as being permanently closed, probably another victim of the very difficult economy.

It was always quite a strange place in some ways,  though the food was usually very good.

Although......

We ate there fairly recently. We had been headed to Chern Thai, but they were closed

It was the night  after Valentine's day,  and Il Mirto were still offering a special menu.

One of the items  was a gorgonzola pasta dish. I really like gorgonzola, so I ordered it.

However it was really bland (though a massive portion) and there was no discernable taste of gorgonzola.

When I queried this, the chef said he had put a lot of gorgonzola in.

Further discussion ascertained that he had used  the mild kind of gorgonzola (aka to me as the completely pointless tasteless kind) , not the piccante, as "some people don't like the taste of gorgonzola."

Erm. Why would someone who didn't like gorgonzola order a dish whose USP was gorgonzola in the first place?

I didn't pursue it further, but it was an extremely disappointing meal from my point of view

We just paid up and left.

ETA: Il Mirto opened a second place in Nunhead Lane, didn't they, a long time ago? On the stretch between the Rye and The Old Nun's Head.

It didn't last long, if memory serves. It seemed an odd place to open a restaurant at the time, though there used to be a pub there, I can't remember its name

Does anybody else remember this?

That could be good esp if at least some of the chickens are free range, and come with salads, not just chips.

Il Mirto was cash only for a long time, wasn't it?

The Thai Corner Cafe  in North Cross Road still is cash only!

I didn't think rotisserie chicken places still existed 😮

    • Wouldn't shop there, needs to clear the junk so you can see his produce and from memory I don't think there are any prices displayed. Not for me.
    • I think it was me saying I lived in Underhill and then pointed out things that were no longer there. Mal appears to have picked up on that and started a new thread. But he only ever claimed to have passed through Underhill I believe.  Librettos is probably the best butcher in ED. It opens on very declared hours. It shuts over a longish break in August because most of its customers are away enough to make opening loss making. It was open throughout lock down and a life saver then. Kim Libretto has served the district for 40+ years when he bought the shop as a going concern. As it very much still is. As a sole trader with no staff he closes for lunch for obvious reasons.
    • Thought you said you lived in Underhill Rd? Cause if you did you'd have known about the decline of the parade of shops in Woodvale. Moore Park Hotel, well that ceased being a pub, I'd guess 30 years ago The post office/newsagent went at least 20 years ago The office licence went probably at a similar time What is Woodvale Supermarket was previously owned and run by an Italian family before it changed hands and has been several reincarnations And the what is it, is it a Butchers or is it a junk shop with all the clutter in the front window, irregular opening times, closed at lunch, closed for a month to five weeks in August, Actually I have no idea how that runs as a business, seems more like a vanity project. If it went, personally it would not be missed.
    • What are the "far more interesting shops" in Rye Lane? This is a serious question. The only one I've ever found interesting was the Rastamouse shop in the covered market, and it sadly isn't there any more. The Rastamouse man was lovely, and great with my grandkids when they were little ❤️
