fl0wer
MrsTP, the airplanes wake some of us up every morning (& there's another thread about Heathrow, elsewhere in the forum) whether they begin at 4.30, 5.30, or 6.30 a.m. 3 big planes, whose noisy engines have to change gear (or whatever it is they change)to lower altitude, which makes them extra noisy, arrive first. Have been informed these are the Red-eye flights coming in from America. Then there is a little gap before the 90 seconds apart incoming flights start, smaller sized aircraft mostly. The only time I notice ED is free of this, is when the wind is in the East. The approach flight path then has to cross different districts. I believe the policy at Heathrow is to vary who is directly beneath if the wind stays in the West for very many days, directions can veer more towards Brockley, or more towards Peckham, etc Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/35837-anyone-hear-jets-flying-over-ed-around-5am-this-morning/#findComment-674649 Share on other sites

Mrs TP
I did see that news story re the jets but wondered if they would have passed over this way?To be the fair the 'gear change' flOwer mentions is a possibility especially if right over our house. There was a really loud hydraulic noise and I actually thought a bin lorry was going to fall through our roof.Generic planes have woken me again this am - argh and no doubt I will be stuck in a rut of hearing them for the next few mornings. NickT
All aircraft hydraulicaly deploy flaps at the rear of their wings to compensate for the loss of lift resulting from their slowing down for landing, however the 'change in gear' noise is likely to be from the Doppler effect which causes a change in pitch of the engine noise as the aircraft passes over head. As the aircraft travels towards your position the sound waves are compressed resulting in an increase in apparent pitch, as it passes over your position the sound waves are suddenly stretched as the aircraft travels away resulting in a sudden apparent drop in the pitch of the engine noise. Michael Palaeologus
The 6 Typhoons deployed to Cyprus flew from Scotland and wouldn't have routed via SE london.Any number of reasons why a plane would be flying over early. kford
There's a 'change of gear' sound from certain aircraft types (these: http://www.cityjet.com/about-us/our-fleet/) as they turn over ED for final approach to London City Airport. As NickT say, it's a flap thing. AcedOut
Dopler effect, ruduced thrust and increased air resistance due to lengthened flaps, perhaps. fazer71
I'm struggling to sleep with the constant drone of aircraft noise. This morning Sunday I've been awaken since 5am with the noise of jet aircraft. This is new having been away over the summer and working abroad on my return I'm finding I'm being woken up from around 5 am with the rumble and high pitched scream of jet engines overhead maybe they fly as low as low as 350 feet and are constant every few minutes there's a gap then the noise starts again only there's no concistency which makes it impossible to get used to it.At first I thought it was just me sleeping lightly but now I know it's a new phenomenon. These flights are all heading into heathrow having looked at the caa online flight viewer. It's constant and appears to be getting worst.I can't use ear plugs because of a sensitivity to ear infection so I'm up and about from around 6am which is becoming a problem and now I'm struggling with a lack of sleep even though I try to get to bed early there's a limit to how much that helps. The worst part is when I'm woken at 5am I seem to get anxiety chest pains until I get out of bed. My angry subconscious no doubt. The only equivalent I've had is when for work I've needed to stay at airport hotels and even that was better because the noise was constant. This is impossible to get use to.I've done a little research but can't find what has changed to make the flight path now constant above east dulwich, dulwich and forest hill.If this continues I think I'm going to move, it's unbearable and making my life a total misery... Herne Hill Guest
This happened to me until I got double glazing. The noise is especially bad if you have shaky wooden sash windows.I would recommend getting a white noise machine, I use a baby one. As soon as the plane noise happens, switch the white noise one, usually has snooze setting and you should be able to nod off again. KidKruger
I was in a Wiltshire village recently at a lovely cottage in the middle of the old area, on Sunday morning the 14th century nearby church had an extended peal of bells. My friend thought it outrageous that church bells are allowed "in this day and age" - no pleasing some people !!! fazer71
KidKruger Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> Move.Giving this option very serious consideration.I have double glazing. All flights now appear to have been shifted into a narrow flight path over Forest Hill and the East Dulwich Dulwich Village area. It's a definite change which Heathrow has put in place since a test of early morning flights ended in March this year. They have moved the flights away from Vauxhaull further south. The view appears to be they want to reduce the issue to those who have had to bear with the nise for many years while the attempt to get the 3rd runway through.Moving away is looking like the only option and the noise is likely to increase over the next 5-10 years.
