Spangles30
Indeed. As soon as there is genuine and/or lively debate the thread gets pulled or bunged in to this 'Lounge'. I think we need to take heed and ensure our views are middle-of-the-road and overtly politically correct.YAWN. ChavWivaLawDegree
I agree that the undertone of many of the negative comments about Rye Lane was rascist and I also agree that many people's lack of knowledge of the 'other' is what fuels this probably unwitting prejudice.I used to hate Peckham because it was the area that the kids on the estate I lived on in Elephant & Castle used to have wars with and my kids had issues with some of the Peckham youts. My shopping area at that time was East Street. But since moving to East Dulwich, I cycle through Peckham every day and Peckham is now my local shopping area. I hardly ever go to Lordship Lane because I don't buy things that have no use and the shops in Peckham sell far more useful stuff than the tarted up crap sold in Lordship Lane. Asset
Now come on CWALD, don't get bogged down in the sweeping generalisations. Generalisations are not necesarily rascist, just irritating, and there is a lot of useful stuff sold on LL just as there is a lot of useless crap sold on PR, like everywhere.Louisa was the only person who referred to 'e-coli ridden food' and we have to take everything she says with a bucket of salt. Peckhamgatecrasher
Damn, I've missed the big fight. Just to throw some light on Talfourd Road re parochial boundaries, the half with the Fire Station belongs to All Saints, Camberwell (confusing - actually in Peckham but in Camberwell Deanery); the other half of the road is attached to St Giles, Camberwell. Nero
There are very white parts of Manchester, like Gorton and Harpurhey, Blackley and Newton Heath that were like Rye Lane is now, but with less money. I disliked them in the same way I dislike Rye Lane. But I will add that I don't like the feel of the place. I am white and I feel very out of place with such a high concentration of halal shops and hair beading places and evangelical churches that are mainly aimed at Africans. It's just not part of my day to day culture, and I feel somewhat alienated, and that is not a nice feeling for anyone. It doesn't make me racist, but I am not afraid to say that I don't like feeling a stranger in somewhere that is only a few miles from my house. Neither is it racist for a newcomer to this country to say he or she feels like a fish out of water in some parts of London. For the record, I am anti-multiculturalism and pro multi-ethnicity, but I feel that there are too many immigrants in London. PeckhamRose
Peckham Rye to me is different area to Peckham. I live on Peckham Rye and Peckham itself is where the Peckham Rye Station is. Peckham Rye station wanted to call itself just Peckham station but the one in Queens Road used to be called Peckham so the one in Peckham called itself Peckham Rye, but then the one in Queen's Road changed it's name to Queens Road Peckham!I think. Anywayyyyy Peckham Rye where the park and common is, is also called Nunhead by some people on the SE15 side, specially those looking to sell their property! Peckham Rye is not 'dodgy' and I lived here 25 years. Just keeps getting better and better!Peckham - Rye Lane area - is also great. Challenging sometimes, lots of aggression sometimes and crime often happens for reasons of drugs whilst the rich can afford their drugs so don't need to resort to crime.I walk down there all the time and have no fears. Would I want to live 'down' in Peckham itself? Depends on who my neighbours were! The Choumert garden square would be lovely. But in the middle of a block surrounded by people playing music too loud and rowing, no thanks. And any of the above can happen at any place in any built up area. But to choose to live in Peckham (or even Peckham Rye!) - assuming you are hapy with your choice of residence, there is nothing like it. But please do talk to people. (And I wish nore people would do this but some are shy) just talk to people at the bus stop and get to see what makes people tick. Even the stressed ones - relax and see what people can be like under the surface. They just want to get their shopping done and go home. GREAT artistic centre 133 Rye Lane!Lots of shops and busses to more expensive ones if you want.Nice to walk around and join Peckham Society and go on architecture walks. Enjoy! Derangedxzombie
I live close to peckham rye lane. The highstreet smells, it's overcrowded, the majority of people on the street at any given time are by fact african/carribean ethnicity.I worked in a butchers and grocers there called Al sibtians. The boss Muhammad tried to overwork and underpay me, the meat being cut up and sold to people in neat little 75P packages were yellow scraps. To put it bluntly, it's a shit hole and I don't know anyone of any nationality that likes it. Derangedxzombie
I should add though it's not dangerous or anything, it's fine now days, no groups of teenagers trying to start trouble or anything. Just an unpleasant area because it's overcrowded and stinks. PeckhamRose
What a bump!I have now lived here nearly 27 years! That's how big a bump! And it's got better!Ripping off the workers, and shops ripping off customers, is something that is NOT unique to Peckham, honest.Have you ever shopped in Harrods? sidmeister
I know this thread is long dormant, but I thought I'd add my two penn'orth here. I moved over from SE22 six months ago, and in the time I've been in this hellhole called "up and coming" Peckham Rye, I've had my motorbike vandalised twice and knocked down once (the repair bills are now running close to what the bike cost to buy), dodgy geezers hanging out outside my house every day, my car scratched up, and rubbish thrown into my front garden (empty beer cans, cigarette butts, plastic bags, and other assorted items of rubbish) every single day.And this is right next to the fabled Bellenden Road. After six months of staying here, all I can say is don't move to SE15 if you can help it. SE22, where I used to live, is far far far better. PeckhamRose
Lived here 30 years this year. Just keeps getting better and better. Mate of mine in Chelsea SW10 thinking of joining me. Depends where abouts you are and which area and where the bad guys live. Bad guys also live in posh areas too y'know. And even if they don't live there they know you have more to steal so they'll come visit. Where are you based?I live just off Bellenden, and have done for four years now. Great place - much less crime than other places I have lived in London such as Stockwell and Brixton. That said, it is inner London so kinda pointless expecting it to be some sort of crime free utopia. There has been some recent incidences with motorbikes, tending to be nearer the Goose Green end, near Adys, Nutbrook St, but not aware of these being an endemic issue. A really good vibe around SE15 at the moment in many different ways. Busy on sunny evenings and actually not as quiet as it was a couple of years ago but the footfall is bringing trade to the area and helping businesses in the area flourish.
