I've used Mattress Man twice, can thoroughly recommend.

It is worth investing in a good mattress (£400 plus), since you spend a lot of time in bed and they will last for years. 

I favour a firm well-sprung mattress which I find gives good support.  Don't forget to turn your mattress regularly: side to side every couple of months, and top to bottom at least once a year.  This will ensure even wear.

Hopefully their customer service has improved then, as I've had several bad experiences over the years (despite their good reputation!) including fairly recently with a fridge freezer, which after two visits in person to Oxford Street I ended up buying from AO.

Their TrustPilot ratings are interesting (I just looked them up).  I know many  people tend to only post when they've received poor service, but even so ....

27% one star ratings is not good.

Agreed Sue, I bought a fridge 7 years ago because of their good reputation.  When it was faulty I got caught in a feedback loop between the cs team and JL store.  it was resolved eventually but not without hours/days on the phone as I was passed between the two

I could write a book on the problems I've had with John Lewis over the years!

I keep saying I will never use them again, but unfortunately sometimes circumstances dictate that I do.

I did once get some monetary compensation, but it in no way made up for all the preceding hassle and inconvenience.

Rather unfair to base things on isolated incidents.  John Lewis score 4 stars on Trust Pilot with most reviewers giving  5 but a sizeable number giving 1, from a quick look predominantly due to perceived poor customer service.  I expect customer service has deteriorated due to staff cuts as it negotiates choppy water.  Not as extreme as say BA who were exemplary but that was when they and other national airline had a virtual monopoly and charged accordingly before the budget airlines changed everything (and despite disappointment with BA customer service isn't nowhere near as awful as Ryanair.

Stick Tomy recommendation of JL for mattresses and others can do their own research and make their minds up accordingly.

The poor customer service is very unlikely to be due to staff cuts.

My poor experiences go back decades, and my understanding was that JL had actually made great efforts to attempt to improve their customer service.

I have no idea why a department store should be on TripAdvisor, but when I googled it came up with reviews like the attached screenshots from several years ago.

I have had poor service both prior to buying things (hence my purchase from AO instead of JL, despite doing massive research beforehand) , during buying things (sent from JL in Oxford Street to a Waitrose in Canary Wharf to collect  a laptop which was supposed to be collected from  JL in Oxford Street, which was very inconvenient) and after buying things ( including problems with said laptop, which JL initially washed their hands of because I had "bought it in Waitrose").

I could go on. And on. And on. At great length 🤬🤣

I’ve had good experiences with both Millbrook and a Dunlopillo latex mattress.   You do not have to turn a Latex mattress.  John Lewis sell partial latex mattresses and they also sell Millbrook mattresses.  
 

Sharon White, the CEO of JL, is leaving next month. From what I’ve read,   I believe a lot of their recent problems stem from her headship.

Do you not trust TrustPilot reviews? Even allowing for the fact that many people only post reviews when they have had poor service, 27% one star reviews is indicative of something wrong, I would say.

That's 27% of 76,392 reviews. That's an awful lot of people who don't  think the service they got from John Lewis was even worth two stars, let alone more.

    • Time will tell if H&B are loved or loathed, the footfall they get and generate will determine if they stay or go. That's the nature of businesses, they come and go dependant on usage. Examples are M&S, Poundland Local, Co-op, Superdrug, Mons, the chain restaurant/takeaways, the chain Estate Agents, Toolstation, Screwfix to name a few.  As much as people would like to see Lordship Lane remain a high street of independents, it is becoming clear that due to Landlords hiking rents, some are unable to survive. This leaves empty units which some of the chain brands considering it to be worth a "punt". I'd have thought that businesses operating in shops is a better alternative than a high street with multiple empty units, but what do I know, they are just thoughts on the subject.   Take a look at Croydon and Bromley where what were once thriving high streets are in decline.  I have to say that some of the prices charged by the independents are eye watering, and incomes i'd have thought have to be substantial to afford their prices. Personally I'd love a Lidl to open on what was the site of the Harvester, but I guess that would get shouted down, oh the thought of Lidl in Dulwich. Whatever next. 
    • IMO, Sealy, the best nights sleep you'll ever have.  
    • I don’t know what the shop was originally next to the big St Christopher’s but if Holland and Barrett are taking it over then surely it’s good to have a choice on Lordship Lane? The Camberwell H&B is always empty but the Brixton branch busy.  I remember when the Marks & Spencer food shop was Iceland? Now the M&S is a very busy store and at the time regenerated the high street!
