I'm not a Christian, nor do I follow other faiths but really don't understand all of this.  I am happy to embrace the season of good will, and put the decs up.  I may even sing the odd carol.  But to buy an Xmas Tree, at some cost, and then dump it afterwards - what is it about the season of good will you are celebrating?  Good will to your other neighbours who end up paying for the disposal through their council tax? Even I am allowed to odd rant from time to time, two with my issue about chewing gum!

We left ours in our fown front garden on 5th Jan, not blocking anyone.

The council workers moved it from there onto the street on bin day.

They then collected it the next day.

The council make a profit by composting or chipping our gifted tree and selling that on.

Christmas trees are pagan, not Christian. It’s the Winter solstice, although it’s obviously easy to overlook the meaning with the consumer fuelled marketing of Christmas.

There are fewer trees on the streets than houses which mean that the majority of people dispose of theirs responsibly.

Can’t understand? It’s easy - they’re selfish. entitled and unneighbourly (unless they’ve requested a free pickup, but even then they ought to keep them in the garden or on DYL, etc.).

Our street put them out ready for collection last Tuesday, the rubbish and food bins were emptied but the trees weren’t taken, neighbouring roads were.  All back in the front gardens ready for Tuesday.  Don’t generalise.

Many people have artificial trees, some people have real trees in pots which they keep from year to year, and some people don't have a tree at all, so the fact that there are fewer trees on the streets than houses doesn't necessarily mean that "the majority of people dispose of theirs responsibly"!

Does the council not publicise their requirements anywhere other than on  their website?

I never  have a cut tree, but if I did have, I would assume that the council collected them, particularly seeing other trees on the pavement.

So I don't think it's necessarily the case that people are being selfish or unneighbourly, though as with anything, some might be.

They just may not know that if they don't have a brown garden waste bin, they have to contact the council to arrange collection.

We didn’t have to contact the council.

they took our tree out of our garden and put it in the road themselves for collection.

So if they are doing this for everyone, what's the point of asking people to book a collection, which is just making more work for the people answering the phones and arranging the collection?!

Or do you already have a garden waste bin, as per the guidelines above?

What a fuss over Christmas Trees. I can think of more important things to worry about, but sadly, some people don't.

This is a section of the forum about local issues.

If you want to post about "more important things" which are not solely related to local issues, there is a lounge section for that purpose.

I would hardly call a Christmas tree a local issue. Knife crime, maybe.

The thread was started because of uncollected trees being a potential  obstruction on pavements.

They could be a problem for people in wheelchairs, with prams or with mobility issues.

    • As we know Love Dulwich is now a Turkish meze grill restaurant and today they have started their lunch time special. A choice of a cold or hot starter (4 of each to choose from), plus a main meal (4 the choose from including a veggie meal) £15. I had hummus with the softest, warm bread to dip in it (you can ask for more bread) and then chicken shesh, 3 types of salad (onion & sumac, red cabbage & traditional leaf), bulgar - huge portions.   The food was tasty and delicious. Chicken was perfectly cooked, juicy and full of flavour, salad was fresh and the bulgar was cooked perfectly.  If you didn’t want the lunch special they also had the main menu which was small but with some amazing meal, chicken, veggie & fish options.  We really enjoyed it and will be back to sample the evening menu as well.
    • Nikolay's work was recommended by several forum users in here, and we decided to go with his services after getting his quote: it was well priced, with the cost of each component clearly broken down. We recently purchased a Victorian conversion in Catford which had alot of damaged floorboards (old, but also damaged from badly done DIY repairs) which needed replacing, and a 4 x 4m bedroom which needed all new floorboards installed as previous owners removed all original boards to install cheap chipboard floors covered with padding and carpets. Nikolay and his team removed the chipboards, and built the floor in 2–3 days from reclaimed boards, alongside doing alot of replacements and repairs to a lounge and dining room. When the quote was to go up due to more repairs being needed (we asked for it) Nikolay communicated the changes, and gave us an updated quote quickly so we could update our budget for it. They were very communicative and gave frequent text and photo progress updates when we could not be there which put us at ease. The whole job was efficiently completed in 6 working days including sanding and staining all the floors. The job was completed to a high standard, and the results were incredible. I still have 1 more bedroom which needs restoring, and I have every intention to go back to Nikolay again for his services.
