Hello,

Dan here I live on Hindmans Road.

I've been speaking to neighbours who have picked up some of the pieces from what appears to be an attempted theft of my car around 2pm on Monday.

The driver side window is smashed and the panels around the ignition put out of place and scratched.

Some have suggested it's by the same guy who has apparently tried to get into cars on other nearby roads.

If anyone has more information on this please let me know - the description has been a white male 'kid' in balaclava.

Thanks for all the help so far - I only got this car home last week so a very unfortunate incident.

Dan

P.S. If any particularly good value garages around please let me know - I have pretty much spent it all on buying the car in the first place

Very sorry to hear this.

Have you reported it to the police, particularly if there have been other similar incidents near you?

I don't know what is "good value", but the people at Dell Autos in Hansler Road (off Lordship Lane) are  reliable and helpful.

Yes reported to police - case already 'closed' though..

In the end I'm fixing via insurance which will affect price down the line but simplest way to get it taken away and fixed.

I've got hold of some video of same kid trying a car on Underhill Road - white, slight build, Arsenal windbreaker, balaclava. Local policing team have been made aware so we shall see..

    • In the 5 times we've needed to use Southwark Planning across 2 different properties, we've found them to be slow and and very hit and miss. Results very much depend on how busy they are generally, and who gets assigned to your application. They also seem to be much more 'flexible' with business applications, and more picky with residential ones. Your mileage may vary. My main piece of advice would be to find similar properties in the immediate area that have loft conversions already, and include those  in the supporting documentation as examples of precedents near you to help yours through. We're also a corner plot (and end-of-terrace - double whammy) and though we wanted to do a loft conversion (one of the reasons we bought the house before knew) we ended up not putting in permission when we heard Southwark is trying to preserve the roof type on the Victorian house in our area (London / butterfly roof). Several other neighbours have tried, but all ended up withdrawing when it became clear it wasn't going to happen. Might be worth seeing if you can speak with the someone in Planning. If you do find one that's willing and knowledgeable, they'll be able to tell you if you're very likely to not get it based on the house, your location, your plan, which could save you a chunk of change. But they'll also be very clear that they can't make any promises to you either way without full planning being put in.
    • you don't need to worry because you're not doing anything illegal, innit
    • Agree with this statement. With our camera, we can select the visual for our own property. Maybe you can ask them if they can kindly exclude your property. A polite conversation can go a long way.
    • This has been around for decades and is advertised as saving your rickety old roof as a fraction of the cost of replacing it. It has also been known for decades that it can trap moisture and harm the fabric of your building. Does anyone have any?  The last administration seems to have c'cked things up https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c86qz9g59v4o I would have debated this on BBC HYS but there is not an opportunity to comment on the above story.
