Dear Residents,

We are pleased to invite you to our upcoming "Cuppa with a Coppa" event, hosted by the Dulwich Hill Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT). This is a fantastic opportunity to meet your local SNT officers in an informal and friendly setting, where you can share any concerns, ask questions, or simply have a chat over a cup of tea or coffee.

Event Details:

  • Date: Monday 25th November
  • Time: 11:00AM - 12:00PM
  • Location: Christ Church, Barry Road SE22 0JT

We look forward to seeing you there !

Warm Regards,

PCSO Pereira Neves

"Cuppa with a Coppa" is a misrepresentation as PCSOs are not real police.   They have no more powers of arrest that any public citizen. They may have the "authority" to advise the regular police of a crime - just like Joe Public.

One exception is that they can issue fixed penalty notices to people who cycle on a footpath. We see people cycling on the footpath every day but have never seen a PCSO issue a fixed penalty notice to anybody. No  qualifications are needed to become a PCSO.

At best, all they do is reassure and advise the public with platitudes.

PCSOs may not need specific qualifications, but they go through a reasonably rigorous recruitment process.

Or at least they used to. It may have changed.

SNTs don't, as you seem to imply,  consist of just PCSOs.  This one comprises a sergeant, two PCs and a PCSO:  https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/351681-dulwich-hill-newsletter-september-2024/#comment-1681337 or https://www.met.police.uk/area/your-area/met/southwark/dulwich-hill/on-the-team/crime-map.

i've been to another SNT's meetings, and looked at the Met details of some others, and that complement looks fairly typical.  I've not been to one of these Cuppa things so can't speak of them.

Cuppa with a copper must be an ongoing initiative - was walking in the village a few weeks ago and saw a posting - thinking about it, good way for locals to discuss their concerns especially if they are single people, families and older folk who have concerns but unclear where or who to contact to address their concerns.

Bringing community spirit back to areas in London - and showing a police presence if only for a few hours a month.

Thanks for the invite, although most people will be at work or at school. It's a Monday morning...

Cuppa with a copper has been around for a couple of years, maybe longer. Some of you may remember WPCs Trish and Deepa who regularly held informal sessions at Christ Church. They found out more what was going on in the neighbourhood, what scams were about, who was causing trouble etc, burglary, intimidation, drug dealing etc. People, especially Mums with young children and older people felt more comfortable in this informal environment. Trish and Deepa's informal sessions were expanded later after pandemic to the roll out across the borough of 'Cuppa with a Copper'. There have been a number of such events in ED - Dawson Heights, a PH in Forest Hill Road.

Many areas in London and England operate similar initiatives.

    • Hey fellow cat owners! Was hoping that you would consider putting collars with bells on your outside cats? I’ve wee fledglings in a nest and at the moment I’m defending them against an orange and white dude (I call him Trump) and his nemesis, a lovely Tuxedo cat (I call Elon)… they are quite the double act in my back garden!!!! It would give the wee ones a bit of a better chance if a bell could announce their approach. And as a feline owner myself, I know cats will be cats, but every little helps even the odds. many thanks.
