Sue
This is just something that is "being considered"! It could be years before it happens, if it ever does! I'm sure there must be many possible options to replace the services presently provided by Crown offices, including introducing more what are now called "sub" post offices (I think) in existing shops and other places. I'm sure there will be many different interest groups (for want of a better term) trying to make sure that groups of people who are likely to be most affected by the closure of Crown offices will have suitable alternative local provision. Especially given that presumably the existing Crown Offices are based in the areas where there are (or were) the most people to make use of their services, or were at the time they opened. Jenijenjen
There was of course the rumour put out that the hairdresser next door had closed because of the LTN which turned out to be totally unfounded, the salon is still going strong. tiddles
I regularly go to the post office for sending things that need a signature/tracked service- so not sure what the alternative is. The Lordship Lane branch frequently has long queues which suggests it is an essential service. You can buy your parcel postage (tracked or any other) online from Royal Mail, they will come to your address with the label and pick up your parcel, (no extra charge) alternatively, you can print your label at home and apply to your parcel for them to pick up from you also. The other option is to drop off your labelled parcel to the Royal Mail Delivery Office of your choice. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/353756-lordship-lane-post-office-closure/page/2/#findComment-1686838 Share on other sites
ianr
In fact there was a promotional leaflet came through the letter box today, for sending by RM's parcel post by buying online. There are also options mentioned for having the labels printed at a Collect+ store or at a Parcel Locker. More info at https://www.royalmail.com/. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/353756-lordship-lane-post-office-closure/page/2/#findComment-1686841 Share on other sites

Pugwash
Since the closure of HSBC bank in ED and Peckham, any cheques we receive (about 5=10 a year) go through LL Post Office. Agree at times long waits. Generally for PO type business - I go to Forest Hill. understand that you cannot process Lloyds Bank cheques through LLane. malumbu
Those who live in the modern world can scan cheques on those little computers they keep in their pocket that also act as a phone. If you can find a bank many will have devices to take money out and also scan cheques. That said I haven't cashed one for years or written one even longer. As far as I know the only use of cheques now is buying the Countryfile Calendar. I know you have had a couple of rather condescending replies, advising you to get to grips with technology and live in the modern world. I sympathise with you. I think some of us should try to be a bit more empathetic and acknowledge not everyone is a technophile. Try to see things from a perspective that is not just our own. Also, why give the banking sector carte blanche to remove any sort of human/public facing role. Is this really what we want? Cyclemonkey
I think it was more amazement that anyone uses cheques on a large enough scale anymore for it to be an issue. Are cheque books even issued to customers by banks anymore? That said government institutions seem to be one of the last bastions of this - the last cheque I think I received was a tax rebate in 2016 from HMRC. It was very irritating. Just last week I received cheques from NS&I. I wasn't given the option of bank transfer for the particular transaction. My nearest option for a parcel pick up point was the post office! The only cash point this week was the post office as the coop ATM was broken. Many people of whatever age are totally tech savvy but still need face to face or inside banking and post office services for certain things, not least taking out cash without the worry of being mugged at the cash point. It's all about big business saving money at the expense of the little people who, for whatever reason, still want or need face to face service. At least when the next banking crisis hits there won't be anywhere to queue to try and demand your money back so that'll keep the pavements clear. Pugwash
Charities rely on cheques. If you have ever been to a funeral recently, there is a tendency for family/friends to request donations to charities instead of flowers Cash and cheques are usually given (funeral directors usually prefer cheques which they send off to the appropriate organisations.} if you do not operate an on line banking account- you cannot scan cheques. Banks are still sending our cheques books and paying in slips. Churches still take cheques for one off 'payment' i.e. hall hire. Hubby received a cheque from Tax Office as they had over charged him. Also a cheque from a shares company - interest on a couple of shares- under £40 for the year.
