This is just something that is "being considered"!

It could be years before it happens, if it ever does!

I'm sure there must be many possible options to replace the services presently provided by Crown offices, including introducing more what are now called "sub" post offices (I think) in existing shops and other places.

I'm sure there will be many different interest groups (for want of a better term) trying to make sure that groups of people who are likely to be most affected by the closure of Crown offices will have suitable alternative local  provision.

Especially given that presumably the existing Crown Offices are based in the areas where there are (or were) the most people to make use of their services, or were at the time they opened.

The one in Dulwich Village (in the chemist) is usually quiet.

Also one on Crossthwaite Ave (off Sunray Ave).

You do know why the one in Dulwich Village is so quiet don't you.  Ask them next time you are in there.  I can't see it staying open much longer.

I regularly go to the post office for sending things that need a signature/tracked service- so not sure what the alternative is. The Lordship Lane branch frequently has long queues which suggests it is an essential service.

You can buy your parcel postage (tracked or any other) online from Royal Mail, they will come to your address with the label and pick up your parcel, (no extra charge) alternatively, you can print your label at home and apply to your parcel for them to pick up from you also. The other option is to drop off your labelled parcel to the Royal Mail Delivery Office of your choice.

In fact there was a promotional leaflet came through the letter box today, for sending by RM's parcel post by buying online.  There are also options mentioned for having the labels printed  at a Collect+ store or at a Parcel Locker.  More info at https://www.royalmail.com/.

Indeed ianr, I didn't have time to include all Royal Mail options, thanks for that extra bit, they have been spot on for me, I use them a lot and have never had any issues with delivery, touch wood!

How on earth is this possible when Rye Lane post office has already been lost? Where am I supposed to go now?? Peckham Post Office is awful and too far.

Forest Hill Road

Krystal's

Peckham (almost opposite the bus garage)

Brockley Rise/ Honor Oak Park

Can't immediately think of anymore

Krystal’s doesn’t even provide all the services that east dulwich does, so that’s a dud.

Since the closure of HSBC bank in ED and Peckham, any cheques we receive (about 5=10 a year) go through LL Post Office. Agree at times long waits. Generally for PO type business - I go to Forest Hill. understand that you cannot process Lloyds Bank cheques through LLane.

Those who live in the modern world can scan cheques on those little computers they keep in their pocket that also act as a phone.  If you can find a bank many will have devices to take money out and also scan cheques.  That said I haven't cashed one for years or written one even longer.  As far as I know the only use of cheques now is buying the Countryfile Calendar.

There was of course the rumour put out that the hairdresser next door had closed because of the LTN which turned out to be totally unfounded, the salon is still going strong.  Is this another rumour you're starting?

It wasn't a rumour, the salon had closed when I posted here.

Regarding the Post Office, as I said go and ask them.

You can according to the Services Available -- Cheque deposits page got to  via  https://www.postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder/0100072/east-dulwich

The lookup details there for Lloyds says:

"Cheque deposit Yes – with a personalised paying in slip and a deposit envelope from Lloyds Bank

"Lloyds Bank cheque deposit envelopes are also available from Post Office branches"

I was attempting to provide alternatives. And yes Krystals is much smaller but it does provide some PO counter services

Ask them, I thought it obvious.  Don't want to derail this thread with all the usual suspects jumping in.

Well, I never go there, so I  have no idea why it would be obvious  😔

And I'm not going to trek up to Dulwich Village just to ask them!

I know you have had a couple of rather condescending replies, advising you to get to grips with technology and live in the modern world. I sympathise with you.
I think some of us should try to be a bit more empathetic and acknowledge not everyone is a technophile. Try to see things from a perspective that is not just our own. Also, why give the banking sector carte blanche to remove any sort of human/public facing role. Is this really what we want?

I think it was more amazement that anyone uses cheques on a large enough scale anymore for it to be an issue.    Are cheque books even issued to customers by banks anymore?

That said government institutions seem to be one of the last bastions of this - the last cheque I think I received was a tax rebate in 2016 from HMRC.  It was very irritating.

Just last week I received cheques from NS&I. I wasn't given the option of bank transfer for the particular transaction.

My nearest option for a parcel pick up point was the post office!

The only cash point this week was the post office as the coop ATM was broken.

Many people of whatever age are totally tech savvy but still need face to face or inside banking and post office services for certain things, not least taking out cash without the worry of being mugged at the cash point.

It's all about big business saving money at the expense of the little people who, for whatever reason, still want or need face to face service.

At least when the next banking crisis hits there won't be anywhere to queue to try and demand your money back so that'll keep the pavements clear.

Charities rely on cheques. If you have ever been to a funeral recently, there is a tendency for family/friends to request donations to charities instead of flowers Cash and cheques are usually given (funeral directors usually prefer cheques which they send off to the appropriate organisations.}

if you do not operate an on line banking account- you cannot scan cheques. Banks are still sending our cheques books and paying in slips. Churches still take cheques for one off 'payment' i.e. hall hire.

Hubby received a cheque from Tax Office as they had over charged him. Also a cheque from a shares company - interest on a couple of shares- under £40 for the year.

    • I would disagree that the tables outside the Blue Brick bothered nobody. They were not within the cafe's curtilage (one table was even placed on the other side of the road!) but on a narrow public footpath where pedestrians have a "public right of way". Added to that, some customers rearranged the tables so the footpath was blocked completely.
    • Walking last Friday early evening anywhere near where the bottom end of Lordship Lane meets the Goose Green roundabout, one would have been directly confronted - as I was - with this scene: Outside the East Dulwich Tavern an impenetrable phalanx of pushing yobs, shouty louts and selfish yahoos pressed outward from the open doors of this establishment, past the curtilage (the land in front of and owned by the business), all across the public right of way, to the kerbside. This was the situation all the way along, end to end. I watched as passersby, old people, children, parents with buggies, people just going about their business, were forced by these booze-sucking bellowing scumbags onto the road - where, at that hour, traffic rushed endlessly off the roundabout. We have, I realised, somehow become so used to this revolting spectacles as to believe it to be inevitable. It is not. This is why I'm dropping this post. Enough really is enough. This roiling boozy blockade represents a total failure by all the responsible authorities - the licencing authority, for example - but most of all (yet once more, again, as ever), by Southwark Council. Two very different comparisons to give you some perspective: 1. The Kings Head pub on the corner of Albermarle and Stafford Streets, London SW1. Here too, patrons like to drink and chat outside on a warm evening - why should they not. But here, on the latter side a line marks the curtilage on the pavement. Drinkers remain, respectfully, in good order, within the line, watched, quietly and carefully, by a security guard. I wager good money this arrangement is a condition of this pub's licence. 2. The Blue Brick is a cafe in the quiet backstreets of East Dulwich, on the corners of Fellbrigg and Shawbury Roads. Until a few months ago, about half its covers were tables out on the pavement. They bothered nobody. Oh! But they extended all of several centimetres too far into the footpath, so into fearless action swang Southwark Council officers - and now these tables are gone. Result, eh? "Well you see," some wiseacre said to me, "There needs to be a complaint." Not actually true, but for sure this is all too often how local authorities get pushed to do what they should be doing. Hard to think why a complaint trumps, say (and god forbid!) a child being injured on the road. In which circumstance, of course!, Southwark would swing into noisy, virtue-signalling, belated action. But in any case let this post be considered a big, very definite COMPLAINT about this prolonged abuse of our public right of way. I invite readers who agree with me to add their voices. Oh, and all those wee local ward councillors might get off their chufties, defy their party managers, and actually help sort this scandal out. Thanks for reading, Lee Scoresby
    • Hi there, I saw that Google lists the park opening time as 7:30am, but I was wondering if it might actually open earlier than that - maybe anyone who’s out running early or passing by has noticed?
