On the 21st Sept we have two rides, Amanda will be leading along the Wandle Trail while Bruce is touring Bermondsey.

This ride is a nice challenge: ride the entire Wandle Trail on a Saturday morning starting from Southwark Bridge (Southwark Needle, south east side of London Bridge). In fact we are going to cheat a bit by ending the ride at East Croydon Station. So bring your Travel Pass or equivalent to get home by train.  This ride is Amanda’s idea and she will be leading. Total ride distance is 19 miles and we are planning to finish by 2pm following a 9am start. This should allow time for looking around at some of the interesting parts of the Trail and having a coffee break. Parts of the trail are not surfaced and can be quite uneven, so difficult on narrow wheels with tyres inflated hard.
Route outline. Start Southwark Gateway Needle, SE side London Bridge, 9am. From London Bridge take Cycleway 10 to Waterloo.  Over Westminster Bridge and along the cycle lane on the embankment to and over Chelsea Bridge and into Battersea Park. Pick up the Thames Path to the start of the trail where the River Wandle meets the Thames.  Nice stretches include Abbey Water Mill, Morden Hall Park, Carshalton Ponds and Beddington Park.  Useful guide: http://wandlevalleypark.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Wandle-Trail-Map-Print.pdf.

Bermondsey, the area along the Thames between Rotherhithe and Tower Bridge and bounded to the south by the Old Kent Road, has a long history. The wharves along the Thames were used to import food which in turn spawned food processing factories inland. The social history was interesting too. Dickens describes it as having the worst slums in London but in the early 20th century Bermondsey was a pioneer in slum clearance and social housing. Om this easy ride we will pass the site of a medieval abbey, signs of tannin, an abandoned biscuit factory and more. Start 10am in Deal Porter Square, opposite Canada Water Station, finish there 12 noon. 9 miles of cycling, frequent short stops, maybe even time for a coffee at the finish. Bruce leading. Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. How to cancel link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/help/en-gb/articles/575010/how-to-cancel-your-free-registration/
Note. Ride reports, often with photos and route maps, are posted to the Southwark Cyclists web site, yearly index at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/
This ride is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/

    • All jokes aside there is young kids constantly getting mugged in our area, there is masked bike riders going around armed with knife’s, all I’m saying is police resources could be better used, police wont use there resources to respond to car theft but will happily knock on someone’s door for hurtful comments on the internet which should have us all thinking 🤔
    • This is the real police, sorry a serious subject but couldn't help myself
    • How exactly would “the real police” go about solving this crime? Talk me through the process. Are “the real police” uniformed? Or are only plainclothes detectives real enough? What rank of police would be real enough to investigate? Should they be armed? What would satisfy you?
    • Aria came recommended by friends and we found him very good. Unlike others, he communicates well, turns up when he says he will and gets things done to a good standard even when unexpected problems crop up. I have been left by other plumbers with half solutions before. Aria commits to a job and gets it done properly.
