Mind charity shop goose green .used to be a watch and clock repairers.also that end Harry's news agent a video shop .across the road record shop chinese herbal shop stationary printers.also those with longer memory's a small car showroom .my granddad bought a canary yellow cortina from there his pride and joy.the showroom at that time was on the old stationary site it had sliding door shop front.when the bishop was the foresters next door was pavlo barbers

Do you mean the small charity shop on Lordship Lane just before you get to the roundabout? Near the pharmacist? Can't remember what it's called.

The Mind Shop is the one on the corner after  you have crossed  the road to go to the station, and I'm pretty sure the jeweller/watch repairer wasn't there - it was actually on Lordship Lane, at the roundabout end though.

Crikey, I had forgotten about the video shop.

The stationers was a strange place, but they sold art stuff as well which was sometimes useful.

Then some time later there was that large place - ED Deli? - next to the EDT, which had very yummy Florentines, but seemed to go into a gradual decline until it eventually closed.

If it had opened a bit later it might have survived, but probably gentrification wasn't sufficiently advanced at that point.

Where memsaabs is think that was called eastern eye .there was a chip shop there previous George's fish and chips.he also owned the chippie across the rd facing the pub on nx road. The cocktail bar was once called platform 1. And few years ago was a pop up jewelry shop. Lela rose I think

Platform 1 was for a series of pop up restaurants, wasn't it? Or at least, a restaurant with a series of pop up chefs. I don't recall it ever being a cocktail bar?

And they were originally going to call it a very rude name ( which sadly I can't remember,  but I think it may have been Pussy Liquor  - I don't think they were cat owners) and there was a whole thread on here where various people pointed out that it wasn't a very appropriate name, so they changed it 🤣🤣🤣

I think someone must have thought it was hilarious because I think Meat Liquor had just opened down the road ...

For a short time there was a very good South Indian vegetarian restaurant, but hardly anybody went to it, and sadly it closed.

Again, it might have survived now, it was probably a bit too early in the gentrification process.

Yes the one I remember was round about there, so could well have been next to Dulwich DIY, but I'm getting very confused because you seem to be answering your own posts, but with different information 🤣

there were two delis early on, the greek cypriot one run by Mr and Mrs Andreas and then over the road a deli opened run by two chinese guys, but cannot remember the name.

There used to be a sort of deli in North Cross Road around 1991 (?), I think it was Turkish.

I once bought some cream there. When I got it home, I found it was about three months out of date (I may be exaggerating, I can't remember exactly).

When I took it back, the guy opened it up, looked at it, tasted a bit and told me it was perfectly alright 🤣 I didn't buy anything perishable there again 🤣

In more recent times in North Cross Road, there was a little  shop next to the mosque which sold really cheap but good quality  ginger and garlic. I was sorry when that closed.

That's the place which is currently undergoing a really massive renovation.

Speaking of garlic, what happened to the French guy who used to come every year to Lordship Lane with strings of onions and garlic?

And also in more recent times, there was the pet food and supplies shop in NXR (no actual pets). That closed shortly after the guy's partner, who was a dog walker, was outed on this very forum after one of his clients became suspicious and installed a camera.

The recording showed said dog "walker" entering the house, moving the dog lead from one place to another, then leaving the house. Without the dog 😮

I don't know whether the closure was connected with this unfortunate recording, but if not it was an uncanny coincidence of timing. Unless I have misremembered when it closed, but I don't think so.

Wasn't the Blockbusters originally called something else? Something  like Prime or Prime Time.

I remember the membership card had pink writing on it.

I've found a photo, but can't seem to upload it. There's a link below. It was Prime Time, and there's a neon 'Internet Cafe' sign in the window. That suggests it was after Blockbuster.

My memory must be so rubbish! I don't remember Prime Time, but looking at that picture I don't know how I could have missed it!

I think you are talking about the gangs of Bretons that would cycle selling onions and garlic.  There is a wonderful museum to 'Johnny Onion's in Roscoff, well worth a visit and you can indulge yourself in Breton music whilst you are at it.  Although I thought the French onion sellers died out in the 50s

Even longer ago than that, the Saverin was run by another husband and wife. The husband was the waiter - he always wore a smart bow tie and his wife slaved over a hot stove at  the back. I think her name was Maureen. They moved to another cafe in Dorset.

Yes we have and we are still paying for it 😆

🤣 Either it must have been an extraordinarily expensive sofa, or the payments are extraordinarily small 🤣

Also remember when Cartuli was Le Chardon and then Thistles, or was it the other way round?  Remember Le Chardon as being rather good, had some nice meals there.

Franklins used to be called SE22 and Rodney Franklin used to run an antiques shop Camberwell way and you could get a really good Sunday roast there.

I also used to like Chandelier, they did good Kedgeree and it was a nice space to visit.

It should have been Thistles, but it was actually Thistells or something, much to my irritation!

When it was Le Chardon it was French food I think. If memory serves, the manager was French, and the food was good, but you sometimes had to wait a very long time for it. That must have been in the nineties?

The thistle/chardon  reference was because years and years ago it was a David Greigs, and their logo (probably not called a logo in those days) was a thistle.

The room still had (can't remember if it still has, I've only been to Kartuli twice) the original old David Greig tiles on the wall, some with thistles on them.

My memory is getting muddled. Before Kartuli, was it there where some poor people tried to open something and everything went wrong? I vaguely remember flooding, and/or a gas leak? And then Covid? Am I mixing it up with somewhere else along that stretch?

I don't remember Franklins ever being SE22. When was that?

    • I'm pretty sure it was still Le Chardon until 2008, maybe later. They also had The Green on East Dulwich Road, which is now Kokum. Service could be a bit 'French' in both places, but the food was good. It then had an incarnation selling quiches or something similar. It was a bit esoteric. The place where everything went against them was Saucy Chip, which was the old Curry Cabin. It's now Joe & The Juice. SE22 Bar was there before Franklin's, which I reckon opened just before the Millennium. I've got a vague recollection an (East) Dulwich Brasserie/Bistro or something similar around there at some point. The photo of the Dulwich Cafe above reminded me of when they changed the name and sign to 'Cafe Dulwich' to reflect how the area was going upmarket.  They didn't change the menu or decor at all. Just the sign.
    • 😥 Sorry, somehow my post above was duplicated instead of being merged with this one, and I can't delete all of the duplicated bits. Many moons ago, we used to have fairly regular "Forum Drinks", where forum members could meet up and get to know each other in real life. We met in a different local pub each time, and sometimes had sticky labels with our forum names on. A lot of those original people have moved away, but it has occasionally crossed my mind that it would be nice to start that up again and be able to put more faces to names (not that I ever remember either faces OR names)  Or maybe it is still happening but I'm kept out of the loop 🤣  Many of those pubs we used to go to have now changed out of all recognition, of course. Also there seem to be more families with young children in the area, for whom evening drinks would be difficult. I don't have time to do it, but if anybody else was up for organising it I'd be happy to help. It mainly involves deciding on a date, I imagine trying to get a rough idea of how many people would be interested,  and then booking a suitable sized space in a local pub and telling people about it on here  I don't know how it was arranged before, but maybe some of the longer standing forum users may know. I just used to turn up!
    • Yup, it's 15 year project (I think some elements of it started a year or so ago).  Imagine how annoyed Earl will be when they find out that the new Teaco superstore planned has underground parking for 530 cars....
