[Dulwich Born And Bred]

Springers on East Dulwich Grove was considered the poshest eatery back in the day. You got your meat and two vegs there and the owners were so lovely. I’ve very fond memories of Springers.

I was underaged at the time but I used to frequent this place with my best friend. It was the weirdest pub going but they had a live singer who was amazing.

Definitely remember Edwards before they moved to Penge, but the exact location is blurred in my memory

But Walsh is definitely had the Oliver Bonas slot they sold mirrors as well in which I used to check myself as I passed.

Do you mean 'Liquorish' or was it actually a place called 'International Cocktail Bar' (in which case I definitely don't remember it)?

Yes, I remember that! Didn't last long. Can't remember the exact name. Was it where the Vietnamese now is?

I have to say, lovely as the nostalgia is - I do think East Dulwich is in many ways better today than it has ever been. Not least the fact that surrounding areas have also improved / become more interesting. Plus the introduction of the east London line and (controversial I know) Lime bikes, have made it easier / more convenient to get around than ever. 

Whilst it's true that we don't have a gun shop anymore, we do have lot's of other, lovely shops and eateries.

I don't remember an International Cocktail Bar, but I do remember Liquorish.

And also, Sea Cow! 

And also, where Poundland now is, used to be a DSS signing on place. 

I think that hideous huge Foxtons branch came in between the DSS and Poundland?

The pizza house next to the other pizza house yard sale pizza used to be a cafe called  tulip cafe before that Tony's fish bar before that gentes mens fashion shop .there used to be 2 of  these shops the other one was  located where I love dulwich cafe is .the sea cow used to be a laundrette owned by Karl who owned wash an dry on pellet rd he also had 2 more laundrettes on nx rd

I was trying to remember the name of the Tulip. It was run by a Turkish family, wasn't it?

There was another proper, old chippy there around the same time as the Tulip, so mustn't have been Tony's. Do you remember the name of that one? It may have been where Sea Cow went in.

I'm struggling to remember the names of all the curry houses there were at one time. There must have been towards 10.

There was also a phone shop and a place selling ?sports type clothes? and at least one place selling old prams which were out on the pavement.

And an old fashioned jeweller.

And a butcher (and another butcher in NXR if memory serves.)

And a greengrocer in the stretch of shops down towards the roundabout (and another one in NXR, which lasted some time after the other one closed).

Around 1990? OMG that looks like history 😮 Where does the time go?

Where memsaabs is think that was called eastern eye .there was a chip shop there previous George's fish and chips.he also owned the chippie across the rd facing the pub on nx road. The cocktail bar was once called platform 1. And few years ago was a pop up jewelry shop. Lela rose I think

No, not Grace and Favour. (Although I loved that place; they did the most amazing garlickiest hummus.) This was further down, near Panther Cabs, double fronted and on two floors I think.

Do you mean Anterior Designs? Sold furniture and other items from Asia. I bought a few items from there

Dave from the Drum's funeral last week. It was like a reunion. Lots of familiar faces and sadly some notable absences.

Off the top of my head: Frannie's wine bar, the Yellow Door run by Anne and Sammy with occasional Monty Pythons as customers, George's chip shop on the corner of Matham with (a guy who thinks he's Elvis) behind the counter, Dave Thorpe, Peter Walsh and Frank Kemmi (?) from Get Stuffed (wealthy geezers) and the dusties propping up the bar in the Foresters, the Magdala card school, The Kebab and Stab, Thistells (Sammy again) later Robert's much missed Chardon, the Moulin at the Plough (Margaret and Eric), Streamline motorbikes, the Uplands rock disco with Peter Bashford, Saturday afternoons in the EDT (Des), punch ups in the Palmerston more to follow...

Mind charity shop goose green .used to be a watch and clock repairers.also that end Harry's news agent a video shop .across the road record shop chinese herbal shop stationary printers.also those with longer memory's a small car showroom .my granddad bought a canary yellow cortina from there his pride and joy.the showroom at that time was on the old stationary site it had sliding door shop front.when the bishop was the foresters next door was pavlo barbers

Kebab and Stab! The underbelly of East Dulwich in the back room in the early hours! (Once you got past the guy on the door).

Don't remember punch ups in The Palmerston, just trouble in The Uplands Tavern (now The Actress).

And whatever happened to the Moulin? Every so often someone on here says the place is going to reopen as something or other, but it never does.

Black Cherry lasted longer than the Draft House (?) which replaced it, if memory serves.

I agree it wasn't particularly memorable, but it did decent cocktails, and I think it had games (because I have a vague memory of knocking a newly bought cocktail over whilst playing one of the games. I think that might have been on the day of the cocktail crawl 😄)

It was an odd space because it was on two levels, with the back part up a couple of stairs, until Franco Manca made it all one level.
