On the 14th Sept we have two rides, Jean is doing a ride to Wimbledon Park and Simon S. is leading an Awayday to Sheppey.

Dreamt up by Simon S.  Lots of information at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BsipZWtqejRKe8puw9yjSrN_loo0rukpeOabj6GYtxE/edit?usp=sharing. Be sure to read this before registering.  Summarising: “A fascinating day ride to explore the Isle of Sheppey on the north coast of Kent. We’ll find out about the origins of aviation, visit three prisons, enjoy some lovely riding along the sea shore, explore old Sheerness and Queensborough. Great views if the weather is kind. We’ll stop for refreshments a couple of times.  Start at Sittingbourne station and end at Queensborough. Ride is about 25-30 miles (depends a bit on the weather). The route is fairly flat, but there are a couple of hills, but nothing very high or steep.”
Travel needs careful planning. Simon recommends the 8.49 from Victoria, arriving Sittingbourne 10.15. This train stops at Bromley South at 9.27. Bromley South is also on Thameslink so is served by trains from Elephant and Castle and Herne Hill. There are also trains from St Pancras including a 9.20 train (also stopping at Stratford International at 9.27) and arriving Sittingbourne at 10.18.  Meet in front of station, St Michael's Rd, Sittingbourne ME10 3ED, 51°20'30.6"N 0°44'06.3"E, What3words ///rarely.amount.pile

Jean and John leading a ride through 5 of our South London parks and commons. 15 miles. 10am –1pm. Start/finish Dulwich Clock Café, Dulwich Park SE21 7BQ. Route: Dulwich Park via Brockwell Park, Clapham Common, Wandsworth Common to Wimbledon Park. Return same route. Mostly quiet streets, occasional busy junction, lots of easily cycled paths in the parks and on the commons. Coffee stop in Wimbledon Park. Route map attached.  Last ridden June 2022, report here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2022/healthy-rides-june-25th-2022/
Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. How to cancel link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/help/en-gb/articles/575010/how-to-cancel-your-free-registration/
This ride is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/

Note. Ride reports, often with photos and route maps, are posted to the Southwark Cyclists web site, yearly index at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/Future/provisional ride ideas can be viewed on our planning spreadsheet.

    • I am sure what the new plan is but who knows how the postal service will work from here onwards
    • My experience is that my local letter box does have week-day-ly collections - but I think very early in the morning, not at the old 'around 5.00pm' times. There are several daily collections from the box outside the Forest Hill Road sub-post office. I don't think the 'Monday' tab is now ever changed. Mail collections from boxes have got nothing to do with the service we (don't) get from the Peckham Delivery Office. Your Wednesday 12th posting would probably only have been collected on Thursday 13th, if it was posted after 9.00am. If it was being delivered in East Dulwich (where the Peckham DO does come into play) then getting it by the following Tuesday is probably par for the course.
    • Are there no daily collections from post boxes any more? On Wednesday Feb 12 I posted a Valentine's Card in the postbox which is about 20 metres from our house to make sure it arrived by Feb 14 (yes I know I could've put it thru letterbox but that's not as romantic is it). After I posted it I noticed the little metal thingy said "Monday" but I thought this must be a mistake and had not been changed. However, Valentine's Day came and went and no card arrived. In fact it arrived on the following Tuesday, Feb 18 so I'm guessing the Monday collection metal thingy was correct. Has it ever been announced officially that there are no longer daily collections from letterboxes? I remember a time, not even that long ago, when the red postman pat van would pull up at least twice a day, every weekday.
    • My lovely tuxedo cat, Rexy, has been missing since Wednesday which is very out of character. Rodwell Road area, SE22. He is a rescue cat so really quite timid with people he doesn’t know. If you spot him, could you please contact me? Many thanks. He is chipped and neutered.  Photos attached.
