A house on Rodwell Road was haunted by the ghost of an elderly lady, who used to sit by the front window and drink her mug of tea, which she used to place on an old Edwardian table. When the new occupiers moved in, they inherited the said table and kept it in the same place. However, whenever the lady of the house went to dust and polish the table, a round mark would appear on it and the temperature of the room would, always, drop. This carried on for quite a while, until the table was put into the back room, upstairs.... where the mark was still known to appear, when there was only one person in the house and their name would be called out, whilst they were sitting downstairs by the front window, drinking a cup of coffee or tea! The occupiers of the house, were only told about the old lady and her daily ritual several years later, when they had a visit from her son. Apparently, she died in her chair, looking out of the window, with her china mug on the table beside her.
east dulwich hospital was used as a casualty station for soldiers wounded in ww1,legend has it that one poor unfortunate who had sustained terrible injuries but also lost his sight due to being gassed, wanders the corridors looking for his fallen comrades, apparantly bumping off this, that and the other.

That's really eerie, as I remember my neighbour telling me that when she was a cleaner at Dulwich Hospital -

in the 1960's - she twice saw the coat and legs of what looked like a soldier, suspended through the ceiling! She didn't

say anything, at the time, because she thought people would think she was mad. Since the new occupant moved into

the flat, she's been complaining about the smell of tobacco - and I haven't got the heart to tell her that the man who

lived there, before her, used to smoke a pipe - and was found dead in his kitchen.

One of the houses on Nutfield Road is haunted. If you're a Nutfield resident I think it's benign.

There's a ghost of an old woman on the top floor of one of the houses on the SE22 side of Peckham Rye. It's in one of the buildings that hasn't been converted into flats - or certainly hadn't been 10 years ago. I can't remember what number... but that one is not benign.

A load of cobblers, obviously but I like a good story. Any more info on these?

It was early evening. Late summer. There were three of us in the house, all grown-ups, and our visit was business-related. The house was empty and had been for some time. No electricity. Some furniture had been left throughout the building. The curtains were still in place and had been partly or wholly drawn in some rooms. It was a dark house anyway. In the top room the curtains were open however.

It was a double bed. We'd walked passed it on entering the room, drawn towards the window to look out over the Rye. There was no noise, not a sound, but something wasn't right. None of us uttered a word and as we turned our heads simultaneously there she was in the bed... slowly sitting up as if rising from the grave.

Of course we had to run, not looking back. Piercing terror.

This was in 2008 and I have never had cause to go back, and wouldn't want to.

Squatter/tramp seeking a bed for the night/kids arsing about? As the witnesses fled without stopping to investigate one would think any of those were possibilities?

That's me too I'm afraid - just too rational to believe any noise or event is anything other than something rational even after scaring myself stupid on the horror films I watch.

I'd have come back after the initial scare to investigate for sure - I'd love to see a real unexplained event rather than know the creaks behind the wall mean I have to buy a mouse trap.

    • Money has to be raised in order to slow the almost terminal decline of public services bought on through years of neglect under the last government. There is no way to raise taxes that does not have some negative impacts / trade offs. But if we want public services and infrastructure that work then raise taxes we must.  Personally I'm glad that she is has gone some way to narrowing the inheritance loop hole which was being used by rich individuals (who are not farmers) to avoid tax. She's slightly rebalanced the burden away from the young, putting it more on wealthier pensioners (who let's face it, have been disproportionately protected for many, many years). And the NICs increase, whilst undoubtedly inflationary, won't be directly passed on (some will, some will likely be absorbed by companies); it's better than raising it on employees, which would have done more to depress growth. Overall, I think she's sailed a prudent course through very choppy waters. The electorate needs to get serious... you can't have European style services and US levels of tax. Borrowing for tax cuts, Truss style, it is is not. Of course the elephant in the room (growing ever larger now Trump is in office and threatening tariffs) is our relationship with the EU. If we want better growth, we need a closer relationship with our nearest and largest trading block. We will at some point have to review tax on transport more radically (as we see greater up take of electric vehicles). The most economically rational system would be one of dynamic road pricing. But politically, very difficult to do
    • Labour was right not to increase fuel duty - it's not just motorists it affects, but goods transport. Fuel goes up, inflation goes up. Inflation will go up now anyway, and growth will stagnate, because businesses will pass the employee NIC hikes onto customers.  I think farms should be exempt from the 20% IHT. I don't know any rich famers, only ones who work their fingers to the bone. But it's in their blood and taking that, often multi-generation, legacy out of the family is heart-breaking. Many work to such low yields, and yet they'll often still bring a lamb to the vet, even if the fees are more than the lamb's life (or death) is worth. Food security should be made a top priority in this country. And, even tho the tax is only for farms over £1m, that's probably not much when you add it all up. I think every incentive should be given to young people who want to take up the mantle.
