Ride Info – 3 August 2024

NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below.  Do not turn up for rides if you have not been able to register. The number limit is defined in our Rusk Assessment for Healthy Rides. If a serious injury occurred on a ride and we were found not to have conformed to our RA then London Cycling Campaign, our parent organsiation,  could be liable for damages. If these were substantial it could bankrupt LCC. So please only attend rides for which you have registered on Eventbrite.

On the 3RD August we have two rides, very different in character.  One is a new, quite challenging, route to be led by Bruce. The other is a gentle stroll through small green spaces led by Simon S.

There is a ridge running from Sydenham Hill to Beulah Hill where you can cycle for 4 km at just over 100m altitude. 3 issues. 1. You have to climb up a steep hill to get on to the ridge. 2. Most of the road along the ridge is busy with no cycle infrastructure. 3. Because it is all built up and there are lots of trees you get next to no views. But it is a nice challenge for a Saturday morning.
Start/finish Dulwich clock Café, middle of Dulwich Park. 10 am start, 1.30 finish. 10 mile circuit so leaving lots of time to walk the steep bits. Uphill start to Horniman Museum, then steep Sydenham Rise and Hill. Make sure your lowest gear is working! Once at the top a level ride along the ridge to Crystal Palace Parade and on to the top of Beulah Hill. Ridge ends there and we will drop down to have a look at Grangewood Park. Return by climbing back up to the top of Beulah Hill then descending along a spur to the corner of Streatham Common, then more lovely downhill to West Norwood and back to Dulwich. Will fit in a coffee stop somewhere.  Route at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1P3S1ZC2C7jOVILN16J7r6CuidCVHM-s&usp=sharing
Small parks often have a charm of their own. And we are lucky to have lots of them in London. Most have some individual feature of interest. Some have remarkable activities embedded. This flat, easy-paced, 10 mile route includes 12 small parks and also visits 2 larger parks. A mixture of paths, quiet streets and some short stretches of busy street.
Ride will start (10am) and finish (12.30pm) at Waterloo Millenium Green, SE1 7AA, across from The Old Vic. Meet up next to the Baylis St entrance.  Cannot resist starting via the Graffiti Tunnel under Waterloo Station.  Then begin the ride proper by visiting some small parks close to the river, Archbishop’s Park, Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, Vauxhall Park. Next, heading a bit inland, Larkhall Park and on to Wyck Gardens, Brixton, home of the Ebony Horse Club, a Community Riding Centre. Heading back traverse Elam Open space, Myatts Fields, Eythorne Park and Kennington Park.  On to Cleaver Square, then a small diversion to the Beefeater Gin Distillery (sadly no time for a tour), the Cinema Museum and its neighbour the house in a water tower.  Briefly into Southwark for Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park and finally back to Waterloo Millenium Green. Coffee break, perhaps in Myatts Fields. Probable route showing all the parks at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1R6fTBvDP_CWqVtzEhbo-kHtOydWA1ne2&usp=sharing (note this map also includes a longer version going to Battersea Park; we are planning the short version for the 9th)"
Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. How to cancel link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/help/en-gb/articles/575010/how-to-cancel-your-free-registration/ .
This ride is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides organised by Southwark Cyclists, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/

    • Absolutely! If the "Non-crime hate speech" was to be handled by the PCSO's, that would free up the "real police" to handle serious crime such as muggings, theft, drugs, rape, violence etc ,etc, etc, etc. The "real police" shouldn't was precious time having a cuppa with the concerned law-abiding citizens. They should be out there fighting real crime.
    • Landells Road comes under the Dulwich Hill SNT, At their last meeting at Christ Church, car thefts were one to the statistics discussed. The problem is that everyone assumes that the police are useless, but so much crime goes unreported it sways the statistics and the wrong impression is given that the area has a low crime rate. It is known that certain roads are targeted for different reasons theft from cars, theft of cars, burglary etc Information given gets built up - Police can identify times of day, type pf vehicle etc and I have known them to 'stake out' in unmarked vehicles of an area which had an increase of incidents/criminal activity. There should be a cuppa with a coppa meeting at Christ Church on 25th November at 11 am. Dulwich Hill SNT will post details on EDF. There is also the quarterly evening  meeting in the first week of December . I will post date on here.
    • Some newspapers, such as The Times, organise deliveries throughout most of the UK. They obviously use subcontractors and I would rate their service as 9 out of 10. We used them previously before switching to Budgens on Half Moon Lane.
    • I understand the possible illegal comments but some of these don’t justify the time and effort  that the police putting into these especially when I hear the resources are not there to investigate phone theft and muggings in the area that must be traumatizing for thoses involved, also I should of clarified i was saying all demos including far right and left
