Actual or likely mathematical difficulties and anxiety?...

... Does (Do) your child (or children) need help in learning mathematics?

HOW DO I KNOW?

Here are the attainment levels within the current framework for teaching and learning mathematics:

? Year 5 (10 years old) : revision of level 3, but mainly level 4

? Year 6 (11 y.o): revision of level 4, and start on level 5

? Year 7 (12 y.o): revision of level 4, but mainly level 5

? Year 8 (13 y.o): consolidation of level 5, and start on level 6

? Year 9 (14 y.o): revision of level 5, but mainly level 6

Objectives for able pupils at level 7, with some at level 8

For instance, it may considered that learners working at Level 3 at the age of 11 have some degree of mathematical difficulty and that those who failed to reach the above levels at these ages have quite marked mathematical difficulties.

If your answer is either ?maybe? or ?yes?, then you as a loving, caring and responsible parent or carer may be concerned about the issue and so, please continue reading.

WHY?

Here are my ten top reasons:

1. Maths is a great source of delight, wonder, beauty as well as pure enjoyment and fun;

2. Maths prepares children and adolescents for both private and professional daily life;

3. Some kind of mathematics is needed at university, no matter the course chosen;

4. As well as being a subject on its own, with its own patterns, principles and procedures, maths plays a supporting role on the learning of other curriculum areas (e.g. science, geography, physical education, etc.);

5. Maths is the only subject matter in the National Curriculum that has the power of eliciting and developing clear, logical and systematic reasoning in children and adolescents;

6. Maths promotes lateral and critical thinking, which is essential for effectively responding to the current, generalised use and abuse of numbers in people?s claims;

7. Maths, through problem solving activities and investigational work for instance, allow children?s imagination and creativity to flow so in a way it is a medium of self-expression pretty much as the Arts;

8. Maths provides multiple and useful platforms when children are pursuing an interest or hobby, or some mixture of these, such as chess games, computing and photography ? to name just a few;

9. Like music, maths has a universal language shared worldwide, meaning that common signs, symbols and conventions may be a new route through which students of different culture, gender, or religion communicate;

10. Learning maths, through the many challenges, feelings and emotions the activity entails, may either impart or heighten ?can do? attitudes ? a crucial thing for children and adolescents responding successfully in unfamiliar situations.

WHO IS AT FAULT FOR THE PROBLEM OF MATHEMATICAL DIFFICULTIES?

I know that I am going to be controversial here but some reports state that many children with mathematical difficulties have received insufficient and/or inappropriate instruction in mainstream schools. Please do not take this as a personal attack on overworked and stressed teachers.

WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Research has shown that private tutoring may have extremely favourable effects on the learning of Mathematics if carried out properly and in particular if the Tutor is suitably trained for the role.

WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU AS A MATHS TUTOR SUITABLY TRAINED FOR THE ROLE?

Ladies and gentlemen: I would appreciate any feedback you may have on my colourful advertisement and/or piece of writing. Many thanks, in anticipation.

Please send me a personal message if you have any queries or just want to know more about the resources and techniques that I use. Don't leave for tomorrow, what you can do Today!

  • 3 weeks later...
Meliabeth has been our tutor for over 4 months now and is fantastic, our 1o year old daughter needed confidence in her maths and she is gone up a level in this time on prep for the sats. She also has thrown in some language with my daughter to make it a fun and enjoyable session while learning a subject that she can get quite frustrated by. I am really pleased and urge parents to contact her. Also her resources are great too.!
