Photo of the Victory Pub (now Franklins)

Just thought I’d share this photo of the then Victory pub, now Franklins, 157 Lordship Lane. I think it must have been taken in the mid to late 1950s as my late mother and father in law lived in the flat above for some years. My mother in laws uncle owned a car hire business to the back of the pub.

Not just pubs, please. I had family in the area in the early 1900s and would love to see what LL, for example, looked like before it was bombed in WW2. This particular branch lived in a house now supplanted by Marks & Spencers!!

Slightly pedantic I know but I think The Victory was an off-license or beer shop not officially a "pub", similar to the Fdenburg on Spurling Road.

Interesting talk by the Dulwich Society on the Pubs of East Dulwich on YouTube here:

I agree about its being an off-licence -- no licensee's name above the front door, and confirmed as a long-standing one by  https://londonwiki.co.uk/LondonPubs/Camberwell/LordshipLane157.shtml.

Attached is a Style& Wing ad from the Kentish Express of 1 May 1942, found in britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk.[removed.  Can't find a way of stopping it being displayed within post.]

    • Hello! I have recently joined a MSc in Psychodynamics of Human Development course at British Psychotherapy Foundation, studying early childhood development, and I’m looking for a family based in London to observe their baby’s development from birth for one hour a week. The observation will last around 18 months and is purely for study purposes — no involvement or advice on parenting. I’m fully DBS-checked, and I don’t expect the family to go out of their way for me beyond scheduling a regular hour for the visit. Other families have found this to be a valuable and rewarding experience. I can also share a letter from my course director if needed with more information on the process. Let me know if you know anyone who might be interested! Thanks in advance :)
    • Hello lovely East Dulwich families,   It's that time of your again... My Autumn Mini Sessions have arrived!   I'm a family photographer, former resident of East Dulwich (SE22) and I have a couple of slots left for my family mini shoots in Peckham Rye Park on Sat 26 October 2024!   You can find more info on my website.   I combine fun, relaxed and natural shots with some more traditional family portraits. If this sounds like your ideal family shoot then I'd love to hear from you.   X Irma
    • This level of criminality is not only happening with that part of Southwark, it stretches across borough boundaries into Lewisham the other side of Langton Rise and the surrounding area.  The lack of a police presence and activity, has resulted in this criminality spreading to areas that previously had low levels of crime. Now multiple car thefts, drug dealing and other activity etc.  Unless and until the police react the levels of criminality will increase and become more blatant.
    • Not sure Mr Hitchins would approve your hijacking of his 'razor'.  This person was not expressing a religious belief, they were making a value judgement about someone's behaviour (not unreasonable, and something we all do all of the time; see Kahneman) It is your choice, as well as an assumption, to dismiss the OPs perception of increased crime as unevidenced- I do not believe you know if that is the case or not?
