The Grove Tavern

Recommended Posts

I'm guessing it's to stop break ins. There was a dog patrol van present for a couple of months prior to this new fence going up.

We can only hope it's a sign that something will finally happen with the building.

According to an article in Southwark News in 2017 the lease will be up next year, 2025. Meanwhile the leaseholder, Stonegate Pubs is looking at re-finanacing a debt of £2.3 billion in July of this year.

The Dulwich Estate which owns the building is very secretive about any plans whilst pocketing an alleged £100,000 every year from Stonegate (which is owned by a hedge fund registered in the Cayman Islands). The building is on the Dulwich Wood Conservation Area. Southwark Council are responsible for protecting the site and have powers to make owners renovate dilapidated property.

So since The Grove closed 10 or so years ago and started to slide into the disgraceful sight it is now, neither the Estate nor Southwark seem to have been able /willing to effect any change.

Or return it to a restaurant pub or even better would be a Superb site and Location for our very own, yes, you guessed it, smack in between Forest Hill and East Dulwich and North Dulwich and West Dulwich and Herne Hill and Tulse Hill, yes our very , very own, no not a diy store but you guessed it, I'm sure you all want a brand spanking shinny new Lidl. I know the idea may upset a minority but the just consider all the benefits it will bring and the majority would be ecstatic to have a low budget supermarket in our locality.

I love Lidl, but that would be a rubbish site for it, and there is one a short bus ride away in Camberwell.

Where I will be heading to get my Christmas lebkuchen ❤️

I'll do an order from Lidl in Sydenham if you ask nicely 😁

Thanks, but I quite enjoy wandering around Lidl and seeing what's in their centre aisle 🤣

Also they have interesting snacky things at Christmas.

Is the one in Sydenham bigger? I can't remember.

Sorry admin,  off topic. As you were!

Yes, they’re still building 168 new flats , the project to be completed by 2025🤞🏼The scheme will create a new Aldi store, 168 new homes including 36 per cent affordable housing.

This space will rehouse Aldi in a much improved and modernised unit 😀

One in camberwell is small, my favourite is the one up the Old Kent Road near Ilderton Road, big and spacious

Yes that one is great.  Sydenham is small, they have done up the larger one on Southend Road towards Downham

    • I had no idea about the sourcing of the paving stones - where is the info on this? The extension of the paved area seems completely unjustified- plus, there is a cycle lane right thru the middle so there are bound to be some near misses with pedestrians.
    • That's really awful. There must be someone further up the management chain who could be made aware of this?
    • I'm assuming that anybody who has a cat can afford  its food, litter, vets' fees etc. Nobody was saying that two quid is "nothing", but it's cheaper than some brands of cat litter, so was hopefully useful to the OP. Still, hopefully your post made you feel better 👍 🤣 We still don't know why there was a bag of cat litter at the bus stop! Surely it would be rather difficult to take it away unnoticed if the owner of the cat litter was  also at the bus stop? It's not like someone distracted your attention and picked your pocket and you didn't notice till some time later! But what is also confusing me is, if the OP knows where the thief lives, why don't they go and ask for their cat litter back?
    • The market is only there for a few hours on Saturdays! Surely all street markets are "a bit tatty"! That seems a strange reason to close a road permanently to traffic!  There is already at least one seat  in North Cross Road (which seems to be quite well used),  apart from those for customers of The Palmerston,  and several of the shops in the road have greenery outside
