Southwark MODIFICATION TO EXISTING SIGNALS AND ROAD LAYOUT TO IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY. INTRODUCTION OF CENTRAL RES ... 01/07/2013

The council consulted on these plans about six months ago. Mostly for safety reasons after a couple of high speed, late night crashes. Some of the planned changes seemed good to me but others pretty superfluous. Can't believe it's scheduled for 3 months though!

There has just been what looks like a serious accident at the junction of Brenchley Gardens and Forest Hill Road. The road is closed off and a number of fire engines are in attendance. Seems as if the proposed work to improve road safety is long overdue.

Thanks sheilarose - when I responded to the consultation, that's exactly the junction that I felt needed a really good look at. I find it terrifying the way some people pull out and the speeds they go and I'm a fairly confident driver.

In contrast, the Wood Vale/Forest Hill road junction has lights and space for pedestrians to cross, so didn't see why it was planned to be redone at all.

LwL, I might have posted a link at the time, will see if I can find it.

Edited for spelling!

Here you go, think the link in my post is still live.

I only found out about it from walking past the consultation posters, even though I live nearby. It looks like the whole thing is going ahead without any amendment, so guessing either not many other people responded or the vast majority were in favour of the whole program.

This is a very long time coming. I grew up on the Forest Hill Road junction with Brenchley Gardens and it's been a blackspot for as long as I can remember, my Mum showed me the plans the other day and it all looks pretty sensible, It will be worth 3 months of being put out if it stops so many accidents.

Vik, the plans that Siduhe found don't seem to address any of the problems with the Brenchley Gardens junction, as far as I can see. In fact, they look like narrowing that junction so the queues would just get longer and drivers more frustrated as cars waiting to turn right would hold up all the traffic wanting to turn left out of Brenchley. And there is nothing suggested for Canonbie Road just opposite, which is a very difficult turn if you want to go across to Brenchley or vice versa. I prefer not to do it and use Netherby road instead (if its not school pick up/drop off time, which is another law unto itself).

I guess that the Canonbie/Brenchley junction issue isn't addressed because that crosses the boundary between Southwark and Lewisham - and of course there's no way they could work together! :)

If you are crossing Wood Vale as a pedestrian going downhill (west), it's a bit crap because you can't see traffic behind you turning left into Wood Vale, and you can't really tell when traffic on Wood Vale will get moving with the green light. Hopefully there will be a green/red man, and the traffic lights on Wood Vale more visible to somebody standing on the corner.
