neilson99
Great news. I struggle to see why anyone would have an issues with this. More choice more local, what's not to like Millhaven? Does anyone know how big the proposed site is and how many screens it might hold? Millhaven
No, James don't get me wrong. I just think there may be a problem sustaining both cinemas. If the new cinema was opening in, say, Camberwell I think there would be less of an issue. If there is one. Just thinking that one cinema may end up closing if there is stiff competition so nearby. alice
There'll always be plenty of people who think that ?4.99 is just about right for a film - like megreat news tho for those that don't Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/34352-new-cinema-for-lordship-lane/page/4/#findComment-723536 Share on other sites
Millhaven
I suppose if Picturehouse also have regular non populist films then possibly the two cinemas could can coexist. I shall now stop being a miserable old git. Reg Smeeton
The Peckham cinema is cheap for a reason, with its sticky carpets, noisy audiences and couldn't-be-bothered staff, which is why I hardly ever go there. Lordship Lane cinema would be creating a new market rather than pinching an existing one. Domme_Jay
Yep Peckham cheap and sticky. Brixton is lovely, groovy bar I've enjoyed and been a patron for at least 30 yrs but if there's to be one in ED I'm in yay. LadyDeliah
Nice that ED might get a cinema, but being a regular ?4.99 Peckhamplex devotee, I'm sure I'll still go there more than an ED cinema, except for any a lot of good, non-mainstream films. PokerTime
I think the Pekham Multiplex shows a good range of films and agree on the price but I've had to regularly tell people to turn off their phones or stop talking at Peckham. So I think ED could attract an audience that Peckham doesn't. Jeremy
Hopefully they can both co-exist. I like Peckhamplex... could use a bit of a clean and I know the area around it is not very inviting at night. But they'll benefit greatly from the plans to develop the station area and the multi-storey. cle
Agreed on both cinemas surviving ok. One is a cheap and dirty 'blockbuster and out' (excellent for cheap 3D films too), the other will be more of an experience, with the bar, better service etc... How about we let the market decide rather than doom everything off the bat... especially with rubbish weekend train services (and none to the West End), the more diversions in the local area for leisure time, the better. Otta
Comparing the two is like comparing GBK with McDonald's. They will cater to different needs. Personally I'd be more likely to use maccas regularly, but might pop to GBK when I want a treat. Earl Aelfheah
This would be a great addition to East Dulwich. Who wouldn't want a new cinema close to where they live? For once, let's keep a good news thread positive. VicCraven
I can understand that some people may find it surprising that a cinema would open near to Peckham cinema, but the two businesses are very different. In a similar way to Greenwich having both the large multiplex Odeon cinema AND the Greenwich Picturehouse. The multiplex offerings cater for the more Hollywood based blockbuster fair which definitely has it's place and market. The Picturehouse group have evolved a brand over many years that will also cater for the latest must see big budget film (last years 'Gravity' and currently the surprisingly brilliant 'The Lego Movie' to name two) but also offers a broad range of films that would never been shown at an Odeon type cinema.Picturehouse also offer a broad range of curated and special screenings which will be ideal for a community such as East Dulwich. The 'Big Scream Club' allows parents to see the latest films accompanied by their under 1 year old babies; 'Silver Screen' offers weekly screenings for the over 60s for ?5, including free tea of coffee; 'Kids' Club', Autism-Friendly screenings and much more.Picturehouse have been at the forefront of live arts in the cinema regularly showing live performances from the National Theatre, Royal Opera House, Met Opera and more. The membership scheme is brilliant. The annual free tickets that you are given, the discount on tickets booked and the removal of booking fee pays back the membership in no time. Really worth joining.I should point out that I have nothing to do with the company but have been a devotee of the Picturehouse cinemas for over 15 years and am simply over the moon that we could have one at the end of the road!Let's all get behind this and make it happen.Vic :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/34352-new-cinema-for-lordship-lane/page/4/#findComment-723691 Share on other sites

Jeremy
The big blockbusters are still surely the bread and butter of the Picturehouse cinemas... foreign and indie stuff must make up only a small portion of their revenue, but are important to the brand. Mick Mac
It would be great to be able to walk to the cinema, and such a central location. What's not to like. Anyone got any idea on timing - I guess it's a couple of years off even if all goes to plan? Any idea James? titch juicy
As a picturehouse member it'll be welcome. However, i'd still use the Brixton one (as they have Honest Burger a few mins walk away) and will still use Greenwich as I spend a fair bit of time there. James Barber
When I last spoke to Curzon they said if they were t oexchange contracts around Xmas time just gone they'd hope to open for the following Christmas. The expectation was reconfiguring the existing building. Assuming same from Picturehouse then early new year would be my hunch but have a query out asking them. *Bob*
I use Brixton at the moment too - but it would make a welcome change to be able to stand outside a cinema and talk with your fellow viewers for more than thirty seconds - without being hassled for 50p.
