steveo
A word to the wise. The bloke at the Plough in the shop with no sign, not only sells good meat, he has his own farm in Kent.So all you Dulwich foodies, you're missing a trick standing in the queue down the Lane. He's selling his own stuff - well the lamb, beef and pork anyway. If you ask him, he'll show you photos of his happy looking herd Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/34204-butcher-news/ Share on other sites

Mick Mac
Steveo. We know that. But I like being the only one in the queue mate. Just finishing barbecuing 5 of his finest rib eye's. He's a nice bloke too. Great photo of Vic Reeves on the back wall of the shop, wielding a chain saw. Photo credits to well known local photographer.. KidKruger
I get to WR at 0750 on a Saturday, in time for the 0800 opening, if I do need to go there, never more than 2-3 folks waiting at that time.Bloke at Plough - stroll in ANY time for whatever he sells. Good ribs, great chicken, and some interesting sausages too. Nigello
When the Chinese doctor was in situ at the butcher's you mention, she wanted to get rid of the tiles that featured cattle etc from when the shop was originally a butcher's shop. She was astounded when I asked her to keep them as they were historical as well as attractive; she thought them ugly and old-fashioned. I'm glad she kept them, now that the shop is back to being a butcher's. Marmora Man
We should just be grateful that we have 4 butchers to choose from - W Rose, Flock & Herd, the bloke by the Plough and the bloke on Northcross Road. All excellent - when I moved here we had just one to use on Liberrtto's on WoodVale - which remains and is also still good value and good quality - if a tad eccentric. Also when I moved here (reflecting now I'm leaving) there was no fishmonger, The Bishop & Actress were awful pubs, the Plough little better. There was no Green & Blue, no pizza or pasta options (thanks Sim Mangia, Il Mirto and latest incarnation vice Indian Mischief). BoHo, Adventure, The Tippler had yet to arrive. I find, in practice, that LL and its surroundings are, in effect a large rather geographically diverse supermarket offering higher quality, better value for money and the chance to establish a relationship with the shopkeepers. I will miss this once in Cornwall - but hope my local town & village will offer other compensations. Applespider
There's another good butchers in Forest Hill - The Butchery - opposite Sainburys. Has a wholesale business in Bermondsey and then the shop (open Weds to Sun) in Forest Hill. Specialises in small breed cattle. They held a BBQ evening a few weeks ago showing off their wares and v tasty it all was too - a gorgeous flatiron steak and ribs amongst other delicacies. His pork and kim chi sausages are gorgeous too - and they do Scottish black pudding which I love. Jeremy
The Uplands was (back in 2001-ish?) probably the first attempt at opening a gastro-pub in ED. But the space didn't work, and the food was awful. El Pibe
The Uplands was an improvement, but was pretty awful nonetheless. Actress best incarnation since I got here.It was defeinitely good riddance to the goose and granite(?)Forresters was pretty awful, though I've never really liked the Bishop.I do miss the Lord Palmerston though, and the Mag has never found the right recipe and I was very fond of the old mag. Jeremy
I liked the Lord Palmerston too. People on here have said it was rough, but I never picked up on that. Jeremy
And William Rose used to be a ladies underwear shop (creepy voice, rubs thighs)... which closed down after about 3 months. StraferJack
The Lord Palmerston was a place I liked to go as well. It wasn?t rough ? more ?rough and ready?. Jeremy
Saturday, as in two days ago? Or a typical Saturday night "back in the day"? Don't remember the old Lord Palmerston doing food. Could be wrong.
