A word to the wise. The bloke at the Plough in the shop with no sign, not only sells good meat, he has his own farm in Kent.

So all you Dulwich foodies, you're missing a trick standing in the queue down the Lane. He's selling his own stuff - well the lamb, beef and pork anyway.

If you ask him, he'll show you photos of his happy looking herd

When the Chinese doctor was in situ at the butcher's you mention, she wanted to get rid of the tiles that featured cattle etc from when the shop was originally a butcher's shop. She was astounded when I asked her to keep them as they were historical as well as attractive; she thought them ugly and old-fashioned. I'm glad she kept them, now that the shop is back to being a butcher's.

  • 2 weeks later...

We should just be grateful that we have 4 butchers to choose from - W Rose, Flock & Herd, the bloke by the Plough and the bloke on Northcross Road. All excellent - when I moved here we had just one to use on Liberrtto's on WoodVale - which remains and is also still good value and good quality - if a tad eccentric.

Also when I moved here (reflecting now I'm leaving) there was no fishmonger, The Bishop & Actress were awful pubs, the Plough little better. There was no Green & Blue, no pizza or pasta options (thanks Sim Mangia, Il Mirto and latest incarnation vice Indian Mischief). BoHo, Adventure, The Tippler had yet to arrive.

I find, in practice, that LL and its surroundings are, in effect a large rather geographically diverse supermarket offering higher quality, better value for money and the chance to establish a relationship with the shopkeepers. I will miss this once in Cornwall - but hope my local town & village will offer other compensations.

There's another good butchers in Forest Hill - The Butchery - opposite Sainburys. Has a wholesale business in Bermondsey and then the shop (open Weds to Sun) in Forest Hill. Specialises in small breed cattle. They held a BBQ evening a few weeks ago showing off their wares and v tasty it all was too - a gorgeous flatiron steak and ribs amongst other delicacies. His pork and kim chi sausages are gorgeous too - and they do Scottish black pudding which I love.

The Uplands was an improvement, but was pretty awful nonetheless. Actress best incarnation since I got here.

It was defeinitely good riddance to the goose and granite(?)

Forresters was pretty awful, though I've never really liked the Bishop.

I do miss the Lord Palmerston though, and the Mag has never found the right recipe and I was very fond of the old mag.

Was "interesting" on Saturday night to say the least. Had to leave with older family before ordering dinner!

Butchers by the Plough is great.

    • Hi everyone, we are trying to finslise our decision for enrolling our son for 3+ from September and currently considering Dulwich Prep or Herne Hill. We like both and appreciate there is no right or wrong answer but what we like about HH is great focus on early years and also being coed. However if we can avoid the 7+ stress then prefer to do that. Dulwich Prep is closer but the difference is not significant. we know children are very active and busy in DP and they have great facilities, but unlike HH, we don’t know much about their focus on personal development and emotional intelligence, etc! Also not sure about long-term impact of being in boys only school. Difficult decision for us and we appreciate feedback from parents if you can share please.    thank you
    • Yeah that was their old policy. Their new policy is to force you to have a water meter and if you refuse they put you on a punitively high tariff which effectively forces you to have one. I was doing well with my policy of polite resistance which was to say yes fine I'll have one fitted but then not actually book an appointment or cancel the appointments they made. But then I was persuaded that it would be much cheaper anyway.
    • Lots of lovely lilac shrubs in flower at the moment. Would anyone consider giving me a cutting? It would involve digging out a basal off shoot, roots and all. I'd love one for my new garden but I'm so broke that I have to fill it with plants the slow way!
    • You are welcome to have mine for free. I was just about to post! Three panels - 6ft by 5ft - weathered/natural on one side and painted brown on the other.
