Thames Water says we have a water leak - is it a SCAM?

Recommended Posts

Since having our  water leak fixed, I have been checking the meter readings as shown  online in our a/c with TW.

I noticed that for a two week period the account was showing "no readings available".

Went out and checked the meter and found that the transmitter had become detached from the lid  and had fallen down into the bottom of the hole. The transmitter box should be attached on the underside of the lid.  With it being 3 feet down the hole it obviously couldn't send the signal to TW.

It appeared that TW had installed an insulation pad to prevent frost getting to the meter itself. When that was done, they stamped on the lid to fix in place. They stomped rather too hard and dislodged the transmitter.

I guess it pays to check the  readings online regularly!

Suggest you don't rush to get it fixed at your expense.

There are circumstances under which TW will fix the underground leaks within your boundary so if you get onside with their representative and appear helpless/impoverished,/vulnerable there is a very chance that they will fix the problem by replacing your old lead pipe with 25mm plastic at no cost to you.
It worked for me!

We have a shared drain and TW was responsible for fixing it when it was blocked. It was hard to get them to do accept their responsibilities but they did in the end

Perhaps the OP could change the title of this thread as clearly nobody is being scammed.  Or Admin.

Why should anyone want to alter the true record of the conversation?

Why do you have to dis nearly every post?? At least it might help the vulnerable folk to keep on their toes and be aware of potential scams!

Because it obviously was not a scam, and the subject quickly changed to the matter in hand, ie a leak.  I've contributed positively to the discussion but I am finding the title misleading,  It was put up in good faith, and perhaps time to change it.  Sensible suggestion?  If you didn't like what I said would have been easier to ignore it rather than get into a pointless argument.

    • It is to do with shift patterns, they were  working 10 am - 7 pm. Many of those who spoke with the team today were retired. They hold meetings in the evenings every 3 months. The next one is the first week in December at 6.30. I believe it is the 4th but will double check and publish details nearer the time. Some time ago people complained that evening meetings were difficult to attend as could not get babysitters and wanted day time meetings. Being half term there were folk with children in the café, but were not interested in talking with the officers.
    • When our girls were young we took them to restaurants to inform them that there were certain establishments where children were permitted but they had to be on their best behaviour. It worked,  Now with their own children (when they were under 11 years) similar expectations re behaviour but colouring books. pencils, comic to ward off boredom. Have been to pubs with our 8 and 10 year old grandchildren but for meals during the afternoons. Would not dream of taking them in the evening.
    • I don’t understand why parents think it’s OK to let their children run around in pubs and restaurants, treat them like a crèche and get in the way of the staff trying to do their jobs.   It’s so selfish of them to allow this and it’s dangerous and unpleasant for the staff and other customers while they are carrying hot food and drink.  I once encountered a rampaging child in a busy ED dog friendly cafe who, on his travels around the cafe, decided to poke, prod and hurt my dog who was minding her own business under the table. I kept telling him to stop, explained that’s not how to treat an animal but he took no notice. I had to stand up in order to shout over to his father who had his back to the room/everyone while staring out of a window. Thankfully he removed himself and the child pdq but no apology was offered.     i also remember that Rose, who had Grace and Favour in Northcross Rd, telling me one of the reasons she stopped serving food there was because of the number of customers using it as a crèche.
