On my work PC I use this Free Online PDF Editor | Edit PDF Files Effortlessly with Foxit or a version of it.

There's a free trial.

My requirements are very simple, just changing details on invoices occasionally. Works for me.

Thanks Meds, it's hopefully just needed for a few hours to answer questions on a legal doc, will check out the free trial...

If you're using Windows you can use Microsoft's built-in Edge browser to add text and highlighting to PDF documents without the need to download or install anything else.

Foxit, as suggested above, may be a good alternative but be aware that early versions of this application used to change file associations and document types in a rather devious way so that, even if you subsequently uninstalled Foxit and chose a different application, these wouldn't work as intended without editing the Registry to get rid of Foxit's meddling.  This may not be true of online/recent versions.

answer questions on a legal doc,

Thanks for clarifying requirement. The general problem of editing a PDF is not as simple as it looks (risk of messing format up).

Is it a form originally intended for printing. Word docs like that can be a PITA.

I think so, I asked my solicitor f they had a Word version of the docs and they said they didn't and to just print them off, or if I didn't have a printer they would send a copy in the post. Tried a couple of free editors but very limited esp the Adobe one, 2 sizes of text, large and massive, just about squeezed my name in the space provided, no chance of getting my address in. Of course, the aim is to get people to subscribe to the version with normal text sizes etc.

@RichH....I don't use Edge and could download it, but have decided in the long run it will be quicker to just print and fill out by hand. Will check it out another time for future reference.

Thanks for all suggestions, much appreciated...

Not a bad decision at all imo.  If you were really attached to the idea of printed responses you could always try printing each page's responses to a copy of that page of the form.  It might take a bit of experimenting to get the right alignments and sizes, but whether it would seem rewarding enough is probably a matter of personal psychology.

I've not had the need to bother myself with PDF's editing permissions, but I do remember having had PDF forms which I was able to add responses to; though I don't remember whether the original text was protected from alteration, as a solicitor might reasonably prefer.

I've been using this tool for a long time to convert pdf's into editable excel documents. But you can convert into word too (and others). It's completely free and I've no reason to think it's not safe.

You could give it a go if your so inclined. I tried a conversion into word to see what the result was like. I thought it was very good.

    • Did you see my post above where iD suggested to someone else with your problems that it could be a sim or device issue? Why are you so sure it isn't your phone that has developed a fault? Phones can and do go wrong (reinstalling the app would not help if your phone itself is faulty). To test this out:  Have you tried your SIM card in somebody else's phone? If they don't have connection problems, then the fault is with your phone (though see below - your SIM card could be faulty, in which case this test wouldn't work). Have you tried somebody else's SIM card in your phone? If you still have the same connection problems, then the fault is with your phone. Both of those tests would tell you if the problem was with your phone rather than the network. Only if  the connection problems continued would the problem probably be with the iD network. Have you asked for another SIM card to try out (with the same phone number, obviously!) in case your SIM card has become faulty? Have you tried their live chat (link above) which they say can help with further troubleshooting? These things would be quite quick and easy to do, and could save you a lot of time and inconvenience changing providers!
    • In my case, internet doesn’t work even in London, incoming cals disconnect b4 u can even pick up calls!  Reinstalled ap & now even worse! Can however, access where I am regarding billing etc. Been with them 4 for years - been bad for over a year.. blamed my phone etc- lucky for me, can just change & leave, hopefully without any delay as only SIM pay as you go… Must be just unlucky….. would not recommend them now to anyone - if all else fails will just very very reluctantly ho to one of the big 4 & take a contract, which seems to have to be 4 two years or just might decide to not have a phone at all..
    • Yes, my brother lived in that area and had to change to something other than Vodafone. He didn't just have a "weak" signal. He had no signal at all.
    • Apparently it is a very old and ill cat and about to be "euthanised"  - euphemism. My understanding is that it wasn't actually lost, just wandering around near its home as cats do, but people thought it was lost  because the poor thing looked so terrible. The owner was tracked down, but only after loads of posts from people trying to catch it and take it to various places for stray cats. I got my information from the "other" East Dulwich Forum, but I've got no reason to believe it isn't true. Irrelevant, but my partner and I once took a very thin and ill looking cat to Celia Hammond because it kept coming into my house for weeks and looked terrible,  and we (wrongly) assumed it had no home. That cat also turned out to have an owner. And yes it was ill, but being treated by a vet. It's lovely that people care about animals, but it's very easy to make mistakes like this. Having said which, many years ago when our  cat died, a couple of days later another cat started sitting  on our  doormat every day (three floors up in a Scottish tenement) and refused to leave, so eventually we took him in ......
