I an afraid that this type of theft is not new and has been happening for many years. When my Mum died over 10 years ago we handed back her blue badge to Lewisham who thanked us for being honest! Many families keep hold of them to get free parking/priority parking.

The eligibility criteria for a blue badge is hard - need to be on Attendance Allowance/PIP (mobility) and have certain unseen health conditions, or really restricted mobility or partial sight/blindness.

The stolen badges are passed on for cash.

Melanie Reid - tetraplegic writer - said in a recent piece that badges are given out too readily to people with non-physical disabilities (explaining that unlike a person with, say, ADHD or parent thereof, she absolutely cannot walk to a supermarket entrance from a standard parking space and needs the space up front in a way others don’t). I have great sympathy for her and would hope more badges be made available for those with the greatest need.

Why would you leave your disable badge on show overnight . If they did

Because they're parked in a disabled bay? Not rocket science, is it?

Leave off. Maybe they can't reach any higher.

Classy.

Had my late partners one stolen just before they passed away. Needed a smashed car window like a hole in the head.

Lots of Blue Badge  Abuse [i call it a Crime] has been going on for a long time and no one is checking.

Surely in todays world , if a car is parked in a disabled bay why would they  have to display the blue badge. All Southwark parking people need to do is consult their data base. The answer is there before they issue the tickets. Blue badge on display not needed

They want everyone to go on line why not them?

Pugwash is right about the wardens.but they don't work through the night on lordship Lane or surrounding  streets.like the op said don't know if the badges were stolen night or day.i no need to have them on display through the night .that's a beacon for some toe rag to help himself .

The badge is registered to the holder not the car, so unless you have told southwark which car you apply it for (hence registering) they won't have that information on the database

If my Mum who lived in Lewisham was alive and my daughter, who lives in Bromley, took Mum in her car to visit me, they would park in nearby disabled bay displaying her Blue Badge. Unless there is a national data base for all Blue Badges - you could not determine which council had issued the badge.

Disabled Bays are for anyone with a blue badge  regardless whether they were issued in Birmingham, Norwich or Southwark. Same as Older Person Freedom passes issued to TFL are acceptable throughout the country.

    • "They sold everyone, directly or indirectly, on the notion that Covid, the energy crisis and the war in Ukraine had nothing to do with the sorry state of the UK and that it was 14 years of Tory rule and Truss' nightmare budget that was the source of all the country's woes. " This simply isn't true. Global issues all play their own parts (as they do with other countries) but the UK govt had  been especially abject for years. Improvements could not be made with them in power. That's not to say everything is all roses when they go To claim parties shouldn't try and sell themselves in an election is absurd - but if labour did overpromise or dig into specifics (which they partly couldn't because they didn't have their hands on the books) then we live in a country where a population and media is happy to punch on them and relect the shabby last govt I mean if any argument I made was supported by some posters I would rethink it but thats just me
