Wiki says.....

It is a giant house spider and is a member of the genus Tegenaria and is a close relative of both the Domestic house spider and the infamous Hobo spider. The bite of this species does not pose a threat to humans or pets.

(It had a picture of exactly the same spider).

Looks like a Sth American Stem spider. Highly toxic bite but not fatal. Often assoclated with bananas and thats how they find their way into the UK on odd occasions. Have you recently brought any bananas into your house? Should call London Zoo for advice. Good luck.
Thanks everyone! I'm not normally afraid of spiders and whilst it wasnt the biggest I've ever seen it just looked unlike the normal spiders I see around the house/garden. so of course i got myself paranoid that I'd brought home a deadly, exotic spider courtesy of my bananas from Sainsburys! However, it is almost identical to the picture djkillaqueen posted so I'm sure I have nothing to worry about!
To my uneducated eye they do look almost identical but the markings on the thorax are different and DJK's has a slightly plumper abdomen. But, the OP's spider also has horrific-looking prongs sticking out of its bottom. Perhaps we cannot see those on DJK's spider because of the angle of the photo..........? I hope so as the prongs might signify a different type of spider...euuugh!

    • I highly recommend Temi as a very skilled and reliable painter / decorator based in the East Dulwich & SE London area. She has completed many jobs for us over the past 10 years at our property on Overhill Road SE22 and also on Harlescott Road SE15, and we have always been thoroughly impressed with her work. We often leave her with keys and leave her to work her magic, fully confident that she's 100% trustworthy and will always do a fantastic job. If you're looking for a trustworthy local decorator who delivers exceptional work Temi is a great person to call. I'm not affiliated with her or her business in any way and actually found her through a recommendation on the ED forum over 10 years ago, i just like to recommend really good tradespeople who deserve a thank you.
