Maybe they will do hot Bovril and hot Ribena in the winter.

  • 1 month later...

Have now had the chance to try this out a couple of times, and had rather mixed experiences. The first time, the lady serving was very blonde (the Finnish one?) and I had no problems... lovely scrambled egg too.

Went back again, this time the woman serving was darker.. and I stood at the counter for 10 minutes while she chatted with the cook and went back and forth from the kitchen a few times without even acknowledging me.. I HATE that in shops and cafes, surely they should say hello, be with you in a moment? Or maybe even take your order and THEN go and do whatever it was.

So I was feeling a bit slighted when I sat down, and had already wasted 10 minutes of the 45 minutes I had available... but then no food (or even my cup of tea!) arrived for another 25 minutes. The place wasn't that busy, either. I saw a woman who had been there even before I went in, was looking at her watch and it must have been at least 20 mins before she was served too, and she was only having a coffee.

Once I'd finished my food, I quite fancied another cuppa but didn't bother asking as I knew I couldn't wait around.

Shame... not sure why they're like that? So nice food, nice ambience, but another place where they seem to run on their own clock, I fear, and a bit lacking in terms of basic manners.

It's on Forest Hill Road between Dunstans Road and Ryedale.

We finally got round to trying this cafe recently. We had a lovely breakfast sat out in the sunshine. The Finnish lady was there and was really attentive. And we took some lovely pain au chocolat home too.

I wonder, can the title of this thread be changed? Each time it rears it's head I see it and think "Is that place still not open?" before clicking on the thread to see what the delay was and reading all the wonderful comments.

Just a thought, like.:)

That's what the owner told me on my first visit a wee while back.

Will check for original story/research source next time I go as I'm not sure it was originally the Grauniad.

I just had two delicious big cups of coffee (nice clean coffee machine) and home made bread (ok breadmachine) toast with vegemite. What is all this fuss about paying loads of money in warm OR cold cafes when you can buy machines and have breakfast in the warm comfort of your own home with a cat purring in your ear in bed. Pahhhh
