It really sounds like you would have really liked to have grown up in communist Russia: Where everything, if available, was cheap, shoddy and just the same as everyone else. Definitely no one was having any illicit fun buying nice things for pleasure. This is the 21st century: Society has prospered since the 70s / WW2 and in fact most people can afford to live on a lot more than 60shillings a week. In fact lots of people in this town make lots of money and enjoy spending it on good stuff and having a good time. This expenditure employs a lot of people too. If you cant see this, you are not going to be happy living in one of the worlds most successful financial capitals at the zenith of its history. Can I suggest a move to Pyong Yang? Louisa
clive3300, I would hardly describe London at the zenith of it's history. London is a decaying, grubby city which was once the capital of a huge empire, and is now the only half decent thing the UK has going for it (aside from Ken Dodd), so please dont patronise me with the b*llocks about how this wonderful great capital city is so great, we all know the UK has had it, and is on a gradual downward spiral. DPF, Bromley is wealthier than ED, shows how much you know lmao, and please dont lecture me on how poor people eat the wrong types of food, you're not exactly a nutritionist yourself areyou sweet pea?BJL thanks for reinforcing my point btw, keep up the good work.Louisa. Louisa
No I think just by reading from official statistics which show that nearly 300,000 people a year are emigrating permanantly out of the UK to live elsewhere in the world, we can come to the conclusion that large numbers of people no longer see this country as being worthy of spending the rest of your life here. That was not a statistic from a tabloid newspaper, but then middle class people cannot appreciate that, If people genuinely cannot see that a small island nation with very few natural resources and dependent on a service sector economy isnt going to head further up the creek within the coming century then they obviously are living in the ED version of neverland. If I wanted conversations like this I'd phone my dad!!!!For the record Britain was at it's Zenith around the 1840's when it sat on it's laurels and failed to enjoy the creativity and investment it had done in the previous 40 years. The likes of Germany and France were in the ascendancy then, though thanks to our having an industrial head start, a kleptoparasitic foreign policy, and making an absolute killing from foisting opium on the Chinese (at one point providing one third of the entire British government's income) we kept up the pretences of primacy until the first world war.I wouldn't like to have been a middle class londoner then, and I can guarantee you that had you been a working class londoner then, you'd be dead by now!!*edited to clarify now meaning your age, not now meaning 2008, which should really go without saying.....get's coat* :-$ Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3377-northcross-road-market-traders-lounged/page/3/#findComment-106087 Share on other sites

SeanMacGabhann
So there is a country somewhere on the world where a smallish proportion of it's population aren't emigrating???? OOOH do tell me where!!!!If the UK does take a nosedive it will be because it alienated itself from all of it's neighbours and trading partnersIreland is an even smaller island with less natural resources and it will be fine.. just fine.. Shared houses and outdoor ablutions were almost the rule even into the 70s. Am busy reading a book called "London in the 20th Century". Quite an eye opener. At the end of Victoria's reign it was indeed the capital of a huge empire, but by modern standards was very much a "developing world" city. Probably lower than modern south american cities in wealth.London is a pretty mixed rich/poor city, but you'd be nuts to say its in any sort of downward spiral relative to its past in any absolute wealth terms. Louisa.Your ranting is becoming so over the top that you are forgetting previous rants. You have made a statement that East Dulwich has gone to hell in a handcart/been ruined for Real People because the Sea Cow doesn't serve battered sausages. In your book this was a very deliberate effort to exclude Real People from eating on Lordship Lane. Louisa
I would not describe 300,000 people a year small Sean, and you are right in saying IF the UK isolates itself from it's trading partners, but the simple fact we and other 'old world' nations of Europe have to rely on a super state structure to compete in a global market proves that Europe has had it and is heading up the creek. Ireland has beniffted greatly from the EU, but they started off with little to lose in the first place and yes they have been the success of Europe in recent years, but again Irish emigration still matches immigration, which further reinforces my point about how Europe really is just an old lady on her death bed.Louisa. mockney piers
Of course the largest exodus from this country is to Spain, and I know from very well how they feel about the bloody immigrants there!Apparently they have no desire to learn the local language, they all hang around together in ghettos with their own music, their own culture and entertainment, they have no sensitivity for the culture and mores of the natives and they annoy everyone with their disgusting eating and drinking habits.Weird.
