TWB Cat Sitter
Cats & dogs are not an ideal option for a child's first pet. I would recommend opting for a more low-maintenance animal, such as fish or hamsters. The issue is when children get bored & the responsibility falls on to the parent, but the parent doesn't have the enthusiasm to train a dog or provide daily enrichment for a cat. They are expensive, & vet bills do add up. Eventually they end up being put up for adoption, which is incredibly sad, as these animals build connections. To genuine lovers of animals, they are family. - having said this, if the above doesn't apply to you, I would recommend https://www.celiahammond.org/ Edited September 25, 2023 by TWB Cat Sitter Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/333583-adopting-dog-or-cat/#findComment-1640034 Share on other sites
Pugwash
Most reputable rehoming centres will do a house check and and satisfy themselves that you are able to understand the commitment of pet ownership. We have in the past rehomed 4 retired greyhounds (Greyhound Trust) and several cats - at one stage we had 4 cats but are now down to one who is now 13 years old. I cannot imagine our home now without a cat. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/333583-adopting-dog-or-cat/#findComment-1640035 Share on other sites

Ella Menopee
Just also be aware that many rescues won’t rehome dogs to families with primary school aged children so that may be another consideration. Underhook
Check out Many Tears Animal Rescue, it is a very well run shelter in Wales. They will home certain dogs with primary school age children. The adoption fee is about £500 from memory You will need to be able to drive to Wales to collect the dog… Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/333583-adopting-dog-or-cat/#findComment-1640164 Share on other sites
