Gardenman
Back again from running my retreats out in Kefalonia. Very hot this year 🔥🔥🔥 Right, where to start? There’s a lot to do, so pay attention at the back there 😂 1. Lawns Give a higher cut to help the grass survive the warm weather we are having & the wetter weather to come. Rake & spike the lawn every 6inches before feeding with Autumnal lawn feed , don’t use Summer feed, it will encourage growth & you’ll be cutting it in the winter!! Autumn feed encourages hardiness & root growth. Try to use a lawn spreader so you don’t feed it too much. It will burn it 2. Hedges Prune hedges before winter, cut them narrower at the top , helps with the snow if we get it & stops the hedge from shading itself at the bottom 3. Divide herbaceous perennials , free plants !! did the extra plants in well with a little compost. While you are at it, collect seeds from hardy annuals & perennials . You can plant them out now or put them in a dry paper bag til spring . Continue deadheading plants such as Dahlias Roses Delphiniums & Penstemons. Take cuttings of Pelargoniums & Osteospermums, more free plants . Take care of your hanging baskets & planting boxes by deadheading watering & feeding them 4. Time to start planting Spring flowering bulbs . Maybe while you’re doing the lawn you can pop a few in secluded places in the lawn . Snowdrops Crocuses & Daffodils 5. Don’t forget to pick all those beautiful fruits & vegetables if you are lucky enough to have a veg patch . Or if not a great time to take the kids to the park or the countryside & go Blackberrying . Such fun getting torn to shreds & covered in blackberry juice & scratches 😂😂😂 6.How about sowing a Wildflower meadow to encourage Bees & Butterflies. Good time before winter to lay a new lawn to establish itself over the winter months. 7. Time to treat fences sheds pergolas furniture using an ecological water based paint & fix that leaky old shed & outbuildings while your there 8. This is the end I promise. Power wash your patios paths & decks to stop them becoming slippery over winter & developing algae In this weather, all your plants & lawns need a good watering. Best in the evening to avoid dehydration & give them all a good soaking Thats it for now & as usual. If it’s all too much or you want your garden redesigning or going over please use the recommended gardeners on this forum, including my Son Oli at Exterior Design Gardens. Oh I got a bad review. Not bad for 22 years, but I take responsibility & the lad I was working with, no longer works with me HAPPY GARDENING 😁 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/332350-gardening-tips-for-september/ Share on other sites
bobbbino
Hey thanks for posting this advice. Are there any organised groups of gardeners that get together in person locally? Would be great to meet others, swap seeds and plants etc. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/332350-gardening-tips-for-september/#findComment-1638032 Share on other sites
