I'll add a vote for Zen - although you get what you pay for - and we use their business offering not the domestic one

Also recommend appriver.com for a spam / virus filtering solution providing you have you own domain - e.g. in [email protected] "someone.com" is the domain

Yes - the same speed service was ?11 cheaper a month with Be at only ?14. However, their "BeBox" wireless router is not the best, and should be positioned upside down to stop it overheating (this actually works, the air vents are in the bottom).

Incidentally, if you are getting slow speeds on your line this is probably down to interference from extension sockets dotted around your home, amongst other things. Basically a third wire on the telephone circuit acts like an antenna and produces a lot of interference, which means you sync at a lower speed. This is only within your house so the BT person that said you should get 6Mbit+ is probably right.

You can get BT to install you a more modern master socket, or as I have read, find said master socket in your house (its the one with the big capacitor, which the other socktets don't have) and remove the wire that is connected to terminal three on the back. However, apparently this is illegal as its BT property and it will stop your other phones from ringing, not a problem if you have DECT or other portables, but it will most likely put your speed up to close to what it should be.

Lots of Google information on this and legal workarounds should you wish to try.

I'm also with Be (although on the New Cross exchange) and have found them to be excellent for speed, price and customer service. The wireless router works fine for me - not the fanciest but does everything I need it to!

Edit: There's a speedtest here: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html which tests the speed of your actual connection at the moment you do the test rather than the theoretical maximum speeds possible at the exchange. Obviously this is subject to time of day/your use of the connection as you run the test.

    • For some strange reason, hubby likes to spend 'big' on family cards birthday and Christmas. I think it may have stemmed from his mother- she equated money with status and was a bit of a snob!  She was also quite eccentric - we asked for a suitcase one year and got a set of 4. One year she gave hubby the equivalent of a hearing aid - it was a device to hear bird song. Nobody we know send expensive cards. We have a twice yearly set of cards from the Foot and Mouth Painting Artists and have done for the last 30 plus years. I think they are around £12 for set of 10  - cannot remember what we paid this winter but they are fantastic value and beautiful paintings.  One of the best places around to buy cards is the Fair Trade Centre at Christ Church Barry Road. Fantastic selection with a starting price of £1.30.
    • I had to renew my licence - took photocopy of my current licence and also my renewal application and posted everything off. Within 10 days received my new licence. My old licence was due to run out in January so I submitted the renewal early December.
    • I cannot remember who ran/organised the original ED LETS. They had meetings at the ED Community Centre every so often. I think there were about 20 - 25 people involved.
