What appeared to be an entire shed, and sundry other bits and pieces, dumped on Goodrich Road some time in the early hours of this morning.

Reported on Southwark Councils' website, and less than 2 hours later, guys turned up to take it away.

Outstanding service IMHO

Just need to catch the feckers at it. CCTV being purchased this am from Maplins

Well, yes. But you want to be careful.

The council do a lot of stuff like that, and you never see threads about the absence of litter or dog poo or leaves, that most kids in care turn out quite nice or that most occupants of social housing don't perish in preventable fires. Although this particular item breaks the mould a little, I'm willing to be this is the last thread we'll have about the absence of a shed.

But you pay for all that, and you don't want to go round being nice and appreciative because, before very long, you'll be off to wave placards about the council tax or the lack of refuges or some newly-murderous cycle facility, and you can't do that effectively if you're open to the suggestion that they're not a bunch of corrupt, lazy, self-serving, faceless, unhelpful, complacent, indifferent, bureacratic and evil scum.

Sad though it is, that's how democracy works. It's also human nature. While we are happy to oathfully vituperate a broadly illiterate, innumerate, light-fingered and mendacious Royal Mail, it's all smiles and chat about the weather when we meet a postie face to face. We cheerfully call for the guillotine in public but, if we could get away with it, we'd kill far more people to get an invite to a garden party. We scream blue murder if we find a neighbour's put half a wheel across our dropped kerb, but when we get a fine for parking our land-yacht on the zig-zags, it's tantamount to a declaration of war.

Which, naturally, begs a question. What, exactly, is your beef with the council this time?

Probably should have narrowed my thanks down to Southwark Enviromental Services Online Help, but it doesn't quite sing

Simple point was that as a shift worker coming home at the break of dawn, to find said fly tipping all over the pavement, and then, 3 hours later, to see it efficiently removed, I was delighted.

Burbage, your no doubt, finely crafted, witty riposte goes right over my head. Just apportioning thanks where it's due.

Religious hate crime is lower and most affects Muslims, Jews to a slightly lowers number and a small percentage of Hindus and Sikhs.   Real or perceived atrocities committed by Muslim extremists and the state of Israel will influence numbers  Anyone who has been to a protest against the war in Gaza will see mainly peaceful and good natured crowds including Jews against war. @CPR Dave stop making a fool of yourself. Corbyn cannot admit to being wrong.  He sprouted nonsense that Russia was not responsible for the Salisbury poisoning, would not be contrite about the accusations of anti-Semitism, and is partly to blame for Brexit. He may be principled and a decent person but is not a Messiah and ran a poor campaign in the 2019 general election, a gift for Johnson. I expect he would have been pants in dealing with COVID, and Johnson set a low bar. I'm with Miss Jean Brody on the Spanish Civil War.  It maybe not!
    • How does your mind work? This is a thread about a bakery that may be opening. Your grasp of history is extremely weak. Mosley’s fascists were opposed and defeated all over the east end, not with petitions either. The principal leadership in driving them back came from the Communist Party but it was a united, cross community movement. The Daily Mail provided constant support for the British Union of Fascists and, along with sections of the Conservative Party, echoed their racist rhetoric. Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose. Excuse my French. To characterise pro-Palestinian demonstrations attended by thousands of Jews among the hundreds of thousands of people from across British society as “protesting Jews’ rights to exist” or comparing them to Mosley’s blackshirts is frankly sickening. You should be utterly embarrassed and ashamed of yourself.
    • I really hope so too, but they aren't going to get much passing trade, and parking round there isn't easy. Fingers crossed.
    • What's your answer, then? Should the council raise council tax to employ double or treble or more the number of workers to spend all their time clearing leaves from every street every day? Leaves have been cleared from my street several times since leaf fall began, including as I say very recently. It's impossible to keep every street permanently clear, and the situation is made worse by heavy rain. My partner broke his ankle in several places a year or so back when he slipped on wet leaves. He didn't blame the council.
