That's some of the most dangerous and bike hostile car infrastructure: anything goes wrong and cyclists get smeared into pieces along the barriers. It's not surprising they changed something so awful.

However let's stick to the facts that removing bus lanes to make cycle highways makes no sense as those that can't cycle face even more restricted choices.

You're right, they should have removed a car lane instead!

Has anything gone wrong before? Or is that your mantra to justify making London more congested for buses ?

Unbelievable

As for removing the car Lane across Waterloo Bridge, that would remove access to taxis, disabled drivers , delivery vehicles ambulances and so on.. but its alright in your eyes as cyclists are king and "a short slender sharp pointed metal pin with a raised helical thread running round it and a slotted head" anyone else eh ?

Now we know your true colours Mr Chicken.

My true colours have been clear all along: I don't have a pathological hatred for a mode of transport I have used maybe five times  in the last decade. Also, dude, what is your obsession with Lycra? Do you like to police everyone's clothing or just people you hate?

We both know exceptions could easily be made for taxis, disabled drivers and emergency vehicles. And indeed any vehicles out of congested hours. But I will give you bonus points for claiming the moral high ground in favour of, well, every demographic that's underrepresented in car usage while advocating that nothing be done to restrict cars! 😉

I don't particularly see why package delivery should be exempted. It's a big cause of congestion and pollution and much of it can be done by bike.

It's a fact that the LCC had far too much input into 'redesigning' road space in London. At the same time as key figures in LCC (white/male/straight/able-bodied/middle-class) were putting out some very dodgy messages about certain ethnic groups.

Anyways... the people excluded from these discussions were disability groups, residents, TFL and the London Ambulance Service - so what does that say about who was prioritised and who wasn't.

Disability and impairment doesn't come with a badge, pass or equal access  and this Government is planning to take even more access, funding and benefits away.

If you want less reliance on cars campaign for buses to be funded centrally, more bus lanes and more local bus services...otherwise your commitment to less car use is just mealy mouthed, feathered guff.

How small minded of you, I'm talking delivery vehicles to shops, resturants, cafes and other businesses not amazon packages.

Without these deliveries, London businesses will cease to be and don't say "cargo bike" as I'm sure a full delivery to a local supermarket won't fit on a cargo bike.

As for lycra, it's a very peculiar thing in the UK that cyclist feel they need to dress like they are all in the tour de France and wearers think they have the right to pass through red lights and crossing like they are invisible.

Personally I think they all look like twits.

But that's my own personal opinion and one i am entitled to hold, so yes I will scoff them for wearing lycra, cleats and other silly things which seem to make them more aggressive cyclists. 😜

Well looks like I've triggered the ire of the hivemind by daring to report a positive experience with an LTN and (worse!) a bicycle. Let's see what we have:

  1. Dogpiling
  2. Aggressively bizarre misreads of what was posted
  3. A peculiar obsession with Lycra
  4. A very unhealthy hatred of cyclists
  5. Insistence on dangerous infrastructure---is this related to point 4? Must be an new low!

And notable by what we don't have:

  1. Acceptance of anything which would decrease car usage

We are coming for your SUVs. You will be forced into Lycra for your journeys around London. Resistance is futile.

Looks like you fell foul of your point 2, no one said hatred of cyclist however a dislike of dangerous cyclist I will agree to.

Point 3, lycra obsession seems to be a favourite of cyclists not me, I just think that it's unnecessary for a quick ride from here to central London.

The dangerous infrastructure comment, you raised that by trying to deflect from the loss of a mass transit bus lane by trying make out bus drivers splat cyclists, most on the other hand have a healthy respect for them.

You do seem to play out of the LCC playback by trying to put down other posters and comment only on a small portion of what is really being said.

I believe you are another user under a pseudonym and I call you out Kolly Kibber, I demand my 5 shillings

What a curious world you live in! When people spew hatred without ever explicitly saying they hate something it's easy for me to deduce the hatred is there. You on the other hand seem to believe in a kind of get-out-of-gaol free card if you never say the magic words. Doesn't work like that.

Merely wearing is "obsession" in your mind? Are you obsessed with underpants then: they too are unnecessary. No my fine fellow, everyone who drags Lycra into the topic of conversation especially in the context of how much they hate cyclists is deeply obsessed. That includes you. People with a healthy attitude don't care nearly so strongly what other people are wearing, and certainly don't use general categories of clothing as an excuse to hate someone.

The dangerous infrastructure comment

Interesting! something you're not denying. Anyhow, no deflection: the solution is clearly to close the bridge to cars., because it's cars which are stopping the buses, not bikes. You keep deflecting from that. It's alllmost like you will reflexive fight against anything which challenges the prime position cars have enjoyed for decades. 😉

I have no idea what the "LCC playback" is.

Are you writing this while tired and emotional? This makes even less sense than usual.

This latest tactic to try to paint anyone that voices objections to local LTNs or makes a negative observation about some cyclists, as having mental health problems is pretty dire. How much lower do you want to go to try to score a point?!

The only one 'spewing hatred' is you.

No mr.chicken

The barriers were installed pre covid between the pavement and the road allowing buses to still use the bus lane.

TfL moved them out a while ago to seal off the cycle lane from the road and in doing so removed the bus lane.

That's the issue here, cyclists are now given priority over our mass transit devices, buses. How on earth does that make sense, even in your head?

This isn't true. TfL don't manage Waterloo Bridge. Its owned by the city of Westminster who moved the barriers as it was pointed out that having Hostile Vehicle Mitigation barriers implemented whilst also having a bus lane that terrorists using said Hostile Vehicles could still access wasn't meeting the risk assessment.
So blaming it on cyclists is also not correct.

There's a big difference between negative associations with cyclists and some of the hard-line posts being made.  I started the mental health thing, a bit clumsy, which I tried to explain in a separate post.  Two of you were having a nonsense go at cyclists, I was simply trying to say that this anger looked like an obsession.  An irrational obsession.  You can read mental health issues into this but I expect that most of us get like this sometime, and it is good to consider how we personally can address such feelings, no doubt exacerbated as our anger is unlikely to change things.

What are my current obsessions?  Well in the past it was  popcorn in cinemas.  And people filming everything, particular at concerts.  Bloomin barmy.  But I've had to step back or else I'd never leave the house.  I don't hate these people, just find it annoying.  As for filming in portrait rather than landscape, that's just brain dead.  Thought it amusing that the Tories used this in a recent campaign.

Interesting to hear about hostile vehicle mitigation.  Had a vague involvement in this once.  They put this up on my commute, Lambeth Bridge, but have very much changed my career post COVID so work cycling very much local.  Of course traffic management South side of Lambeth Bridge is nuts, but not sure which local authority to rant at

The mental health 'advice' was really clumsy, on so many levels.

You say you get obsessed by some things but that you don't feel anger or hatred while insisting that others do feel anger, to the point they need help.

Just because you and Mr C get wound up about negative comments calling out some cyclists, some cycling behaviour or a bit of mockery based on what a small subset of cyclists wear, doesn't make it hate, anger or obsession. It is just your view, perhaps even a little bit of projection.

“A bit clumsy”……it was downright disgraceful, let me remind you that you suggested someone needed CBT - and you still have done nothing to correct it. This speaks volumes about you…..and now your erstwhile pro-cycling fanatic Mr Chicken has embarked down a similar abusive path………if all cyclists are like you is it any wonder they have such a bad reputation for being a smidge self-centred?

The aerodynamic benefits of the Lycra would be negated by the drag caused by the hair and every Full Kit Wally cyclist knows that you have to shave any excess hair (I mock but I do know friends of mine - who club cycle at the weekends and shave their legs for the aerodynamic benefits - I did laugh when they told me………)

Mr Chicken, mocking some cyclists for wearing lycra does not make you a racist, as you have tried to infer.

It was a fun little light mockery, comparing your arguing tactics to that of our erstwhile prime minister. I though you were just telling me how a little light mockery was entirely fine, but now you jump to ridiculous extremes (racism! what a silly idea). Have I misunderstood you about mockery? Is it not something you're happy with?

Just as another poster tried to use the issue of mental illness to underpin their point in a very inappropriate fashion, you have now chosen the serious issue of racism as a mechanism for what you call a bit of light hearted banter in an attempt to score points. As you observe, the sort of thing big dog would do. If the cap fits chicken!

You seem a bit sensitive about light mockery, @first mate. Might I recommend that if you dislike being on the receiving end then you perhaps should avoid being on the giving end?

Edit:

Boris uses those tactics for a reason, specifically because reason, logic and facts aren't on his side so he wants to convince people by appealing to their lower instincts. Your defense is that you're not racist. I'm 100% sure that's true, but don't you think that's an awfully low bar? If should give you pause for thought if you adopt the tactics of awful people even if you believe you are using them for good.

Edited by mr.chicken

Oh sorry, were you trying to mock something or someone? All I read was your attempt to conflate another poster's comments on lycra with Boris Johnsons's extremely offensive comments about the attire of some Muslim Women. Was the latter what you meant by "light mockery"? Quite how you got to that is not clear. You are the one going for the low blows.

    • Money has to be raised in order to slow the almost terminal decline of public services bought on through years of neglect under the last government. There is no way to raise taxes that does not have some negative impacts / trade offs. But if we want public services and infrastructure that work then raise taxes we must.  Personally I'm glad that she is has gone some way to narrowing the inheritance loop hole which was being used by rich individuals (who are not farmers) to avoid tax. She's slightly rebalanced the burden away from the young, putting it more on wealthier pensioners (who let's face it, have been disproportionately protected for many, many years). And the NICs increase, whilst undoubtedly inflationary, won't be directly passed on (some will, some will likely be absorbed by companies); it's better than raising it on employees, which would have done more to depress growth. Overall, I think she's sailed a prudent course through very choppy waters. The electorate needs to get serious... you can't have European style services and US levels of tax. Borrowing for tax cuts, Truss style, it is is not. Of course the elephant in the room (growing ever larger now Trump is in office and threatening tariffs) is our relationship with the EU. If we want better growth, we need a closer relationship with our nearest and largest trading block. We will at some point have to review tax on transport more radically (as we see greater up take of electric vehicles). The most economically rational system would be one of dynamic road pricing. But politically, very difficult to do
    • Labour was right not to increase fuel duty - it's not just motorists it affects, but goods transport. Fuel goes up, inflation goes up. Inflation will go up now anyway, and growth will stagnate, because businesses will pass the employee NIC hikes onto customers.  I think farms should be exempt from the 20% IHT. I don't know any rich famers, only ones who work their fingers to the bone. But it's in their blood and taking that, often multi-generation, legacy out of the family is heart-breaking. Many work to such low yields, and yet they'll often still bring a lamb to the vet, even if the fees are more than the lamb's life (or death) is worth. Food security should be made a top priority in this country. And, even tho the tax is only for farms over £1m, that's probably not much when you add it all up. I think every incentive should be given to young people who want to take up the mantle.
