Gardenman
Hello . Apologies for missing May but here are your tips for June & there are a lot of them . So take a seat , relax , maybe a Gin & tonic 1. If you want some flowers & to feed the Bees maybe don’t cut your lawn this month. But if it’s up round your neck it may be a good idea 😂 if you do , maybe cross cut it to encourage strength. That is cut in a straight line then lower the blades & cut diagonally 2. Use a Dutch hoe to keep the weeds down on your borders . If you don’t have a hoe , then good old fashioned hands will do 3. Watering . As it has been particularly dry water your gardens in the evening including the lawn to prevent evaporation 4. Make up hanging baskets & containers to put about your garden. Use a mixture of compost topsoil & put some broken polystyrene in the mix to save water Remember to feed them once or twice a month 5 Prune any flowering plants that have finished flowering. Particularly Roses . Cut them back to 3 stems below the flower & most times you get a second flowering 🌹 Euphorbias like their stems cut right back to stop mildew forming Pinch out leading shoots on Chrysanthemums & Helianthus to make the plants more bushy Divide Hostas as they come into growth & Primulas to encourage more next year Cut back leaves on bulbs once they have dried out Thin out new shoots on trees & shrubs that were pruned in winter to encourage growth. Cut out crossing stems & let air into the tree Prune Deutzia Weigala Philadelphus & Viburnum when they have finished flowering to give more flowers next year Prune Rhododendrons lightly now & harder next Spring Prune Clematis Montana & Honey suckle of dead & diseased stems You can cut back hard if needed Small Mimosa trees if you are lucky enough to have one can be cut back now the larger trees are more difficult to prune Prune Pyracanthas. This encourages those beautiful orange & red berries for winter 6 Time to replenish that G & T put perennials in the gaps in your Herbaceous borders 7. Use your fingers to get rid of Aphids collect slugs & snails & take them to the countryside when you go . Believe me if you chuck them over the fence . They will come back 🤣. Do not use pellets. They kill bird life mice & voles who eat them That’s it . Thanks for reading Enjoy your month in the garden, it is your connection to nature . Spending time there is good for you 😁 If you find yourself in need of help, use well recommended gardeners on the Forum.
