Having lived on Barry road since 2001 I have seen many car crashes and people especially children run over plus many animals killed I have lost 1 dog and 3 cats over the years to speeding drivers and wreckless drivers. There needs to be something put on Barry road as I've seen so many people speeding and overtaking other vehicles , I personally have asked the council 4 times to put speed bumps or cameras along Barry road but they have refused to do so as speed bumps will affect the busses using Barry road and also they will only put cameras and road carming measures in Barry road if requested to do so by the police ...

The buses goes back to when the council did put a speed hump in which broke the chassis of the old routemaster buses causing TfL to divert them away from Barry Road and to run along Lordship Lanr until the hump was removed.

I think there is also concerns that with buses and lorries using Barru Road that vibrations from big vehicles going over humps will damage property leaving the council potentially liable

Average speed cameras are a great way to reduce speed, improve road safety and also encourages smoother driving which cuts emissions.  I'd love these on Brenchley Gardens, and out of borough Perry Vale.  I need Southwark and Lewisham road officers to think the same.

I'd also love the main political parties to understand this and explain the benefits to drivers to get them on board, so a win win win win win, and not a vote loser.

There was a speed camera installed at the top end of Barry Road near the bus stop going towards Peckham. This was several years ago but was removed for some unknown reason. I have lived in Barry Road since 1975 and there have been various campaigns by local residents to reduce speeds. Corners such as at Goodrich, Upland and Underhill were supposed to decrease speed but in effect have increased accidents as drivers coming from the side roads have to pull out so far to see on coming traffic. Have also taken part in 2 road watches with police re speeding and I know other residents near the Upland Road end have done this frequently. Humps were installed many years ago but bus drivers refused to use Barry Road as damaging vehicles and also complaints by passengers of uncomfortable journeys. Barry Road like most other roads has a 20 mph speed limit, I have frequently been overtaken by impatient  drivers not  willing to stick to this. Traffic and noise has increased since closure of roads re LTN, also the frequent closures of many roads due to burst pipes have seen additional traffic on Barry Road as bus routes such as 63/363 have been redirected.  Council did draw up plans some time ago and displayed then in the community centre, and St Clements Hall for local consultation, but many of the proposals were rejected  or found to be impractical. There was a proposal a few years ago to put a zebra crossing at the 'top end' of Barry to give a safe crossing for St Anthony's pupils but residents realised that drivers coming down from lights towards Peckham would have insufficient time to brake (even at 20mph) as crossing was just beyond the bend.

I disagree. There are clear speed limits in place and therefore absolutely no reason for speeding ( people speed in Devon too and country roads are notoriously dangerous).

Why the Council won't put a camera in on such a well used road, when they can do it elsewhere, is not clear. Perhaps someone has the answer?

You buy a house ( cheaper than the surrounding houses  ) along a busy main road and are surprised that it has a lot of fast moving traffic.

solution-  move to Devon or ........... (or  any number of boring lovely idyllic places with no jobs, museums, theatres  etc

We shouldn't accept dangerous driving just because it's a 'busy road'.

We live on barry road, there was a dreadful crash outside our house a few years ago (thankfully no-one was hurt but 3 cars were written off and property damaged). Young guy doing 60-70mph - it was late in the evening , I shudder to think what would have happened had it been earlier in the day since he shunted a car across the pavement into a wall.

Its my understanding that a standard fixed speed camera would do nothing to improve the issue of speeding since people just slow down and then speed up once past.

Average speed cameras are the only way to ensure a limit is adhered to consistently but owing to the multiple different entry and exit points to the road, it would be extraordinarily difficult to actually enforce average speed checks.

Theres the added problem of large poles And cameras lining the streets being an eyesore.

Technology will eventually solve the problem with much smaller cams mounted to existing lampposts with computer systems that can cope with all the different surrounding roads and junctions too.

Did she stop at the scene and give you her details which I think should include insurance.  If not it is a hit and run and report to the police

Sounds as if she stopped but then denied hitting you.

There will be matching paint at the point of impact.

There will be ambulance chaser solicitors you can use if all else fails.

    • Money has to be raised in order to slow the almost terminal decline of public services bought on through years of neglect under the last government. There is no way to raise taxes that does not have some negative impacts / trade offs. But if we want public services and infrastructure that work then raise taxes we must.  Personally I'm glad that she is has gone some way to narrowing the inheritance loop hole which was being used by rich individuals (who are not farmers) to avoid tax. She's slightly rebalanced the burden away from the young, putting it more on wealthier pensioners (who let's face it, have been disproportionately protected for many, many years). And the NICs increase, whilst undoubtedly inflationary, won't be directly passed on (some will, some will likely be absorbed by companies); it's better than raising it on employees, which would have done more to depress growth. Overall, I think she's sailed a prudent course through very choppy waters. The electorate needs to get serious... you can't have European style services and US levels of tax. Borrowing for tax cuts, Truss style, it is is not. Of course the elephant in the room (growing ever larger now Trump is in office and threatening tariffs) is our relationship with the EU. If we want better growth, we need a closer relationship with our nearest and largest trading block. We will at some point have to review tax on transport more radically (as we see greater up take of electric vehicles). The most economically rational system would be one of dynamic road pricing. But politically, very difficult to do
    • Labour was right not to increase fuel duty - it's not just motorists it affects, but goods transport. Fuel goes up, inflation goes up. Inflation will go up now anyway, and growth will stagnate, because businesses will pass the employee NIC hikes onto customers.  I think farms should be exempt from the 20% IHT. I don't know any rich famers, only ones who work their fingers to the bone. But it's in their blood and taking that, often multi-generation, legacy out of the family is heart-breaking. Many work to such low yields, and yet they'll often still bring a lamb to the vet, even if the fees are more than the lamb's life (or death) is worth. Food security should be made a top priority in this country. And, even tho the tax is only for farms over £1m, that's probably not much when you add it all up. I think every incentive should be given to young people who want to take up the mantle.
