Not to mention the spicy bean burger for veggies and the almighty 1/2 lb-er burger. Great milkshakes. It was the only burger place my Mum and Dad would take me to as the food was cooked fresh and it got served on plates with proper cutlery.Love it! *Bob*
You could visit the one in Streatham - not far away. The atmosphere there is an interesting mix: I'd say it's a cross between a retirement home, a motorway service station and a crematorium. But yes.. the food does come on plates. david_carnell
Rose-tinted specs Bob. I have a suspicion that should I actually go to one now my palate would be assaulted. I fear after too many years of living off char-grilled sirloin steaks and caramelised onions served in a toasted sourdough buns something as ordinary as Wimpy would fail to cut the proverbial mustard. In the meantime an interesting list of ingredients in a McDonalds strawberry milkshake:Milkshake Base: Milk, skimmed milk, cream, sugar, skimmed milk powder, glucose. Stabilisers: E412 guar gum, E452 sodium polyphosphate, E407 carrageenan, E466 carboxymethylcellulose. Vanilla flavour. Strawberry Flavour Milkshake Syrup: Water, sugar, glucose syrup, strawberry juice concentrate, acidifier: E330 citric acid, strawberry flavour, preservative: E202 potassium sorbate , natural colouring agent: E162 beetroot juice concentrate.Mmmm. I see no-one suggesting it's beyond the paleThere is so much anti-McD hysteria, some justified and some not justified IMO, it really is not worth defending them - I know, I've heard it all before, having worked for the filthy capitalist worker-exploiting murder burger shovellers on and off since 1987 (though I left uni without any debt thanks to their comparatively generous wages and flexible shifts).Having said that, I wouldn't want them on Lordship Lane. They attract the wrong sort of people. Brendan
Back on Wimpy Bars folks. I grew up with Wimpy as in SA. It has evolved differently over there though but is definitely more of a diner than a McD style take-out. But apparently:?On 27 February 2007 Famous Brands, who owns the Wimpy franchise in South Africa, announced that it had acquired Wimpy UK. Having acquired the brand Famous Brands has re-branded Wimpy in the UK to bring it in line with Wimpy South Africa. The 'new' logo is actually one used by Wimpy UK from the 1960's until the 1980's. Wimpy are said to be looking at a long term plan to bring the brand up to date and increase the number of units throughout the UK.?I love the Wimpys in SA but it probably has more to do with childhood memories and the fact that now it is a compulsory holiday road trip stop off rather than there being anything particularly special about them. It is streets better than McDs or Burger King though which isn?t really all that difficult. Peckhamgatecrasher
I don't remember the Brown Derby looking that good! And what is a waitron? Sounds rather robotic - that could be fun. Brendan
I also noticed that you must ask the Waitron for stuff. It must be some newfangled electronic ordering system involving robots that are bound to end up going on a rampaging killing spree after being reprogrammed by a disgruntled employee. You know the one, specky chap, studying physics at uni, works in the Wimpy part time, always practising that diabolical laugher when he thinks no one?s looking. Keef
We have a Wimpy in Sydenham, they are quite expensive, ut you do get table service, and your food on a plate.I would love a MaccyDees on Lordship Lane simply so I could get my hands on the Chicken Legend with spicy salsa after a few beers!Wouldn't mind a Subway or Nandos either.Been a while since we've had a good old anti big chain thread on here. As per usual, I would love the chains to come, simply to annoy those who don't want them. :)-D Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3227-macdonalds-on-lordship-lane-lounged/page/4/#findComment-100934 Share on other sites
HonaloochieB
So I think we're all agreed then that the Winpy is imminently suitable for LL. There's nice plates and real cutlery, the toothsome special sauce and most of all the chocolate bowler.See you at the opening, and if they can get a Beefeater to cut the ribbon then so much the better. SimonM
Personally I am still agonising over the Foxtons/McDonald's dilemma. Which would I/do I loathe the least? Which is the lesser of two weevils? Would discarded Big Mac wrappers be a greater palsy than the current outbreak of Minishitemobiles? These are deep waters, Watson.... cate
I vote for Leon and/or Giraffe. If you haven't tried either, Leon has a branch in Spitalfields and in Carnaby Street, as well as a few others. Think there is one on the Southbank somewhere. Very fresh and seasonal food. Giraffe is great for kids and, I find, consistently good. There is one off Marylebone High Street, and one in Ken. High Street, plus others. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3227-macdonalds-on-lordship-lane-lounged/page/4/#findComment-101502 Share on other sites
