My old Compac Tower hard drive is proving to be too slow for many of the programmes I need to access.

Need to upgrade to a Tower hard drive capable of taking Windows 10.

Would like to keep my monitor and keyboard. Not keen on the 'all in one' type.

Currys/PC world now sell more laptops that desk based and are also very low on all stock (according to grandson who works there). Argos seem to have brands I have never heard of i.e. Horizon.

I use my PC mainly for emails, writing reports, playing solitaire, downloading articles and of course EDF. Also have several USB for other professional re ports. I have WI FI in the house.

Any suggestions where I can go to purchase new tower other than Argos/PC world.? Not keen on ordering on line due to postal difficulties - but can pick up if reasonable local.

I've gone to a place on the Old Kent Road for many years, not a lot of on-line profile (Google ratings are mixed), but I am happy and need to get a new build (I should have done this before Covid...)

I'll hopefully pop down in the week to get some prices etc. They built my current PC well over ten years ago, they've cleaned it (electronically and physically) over the years but its on its last legs...

Still prefer to sit at a desk rather than tablet/phone/and the laptop I am on at the mo

I'll probably spend about £500 keeping my screen and aged keyboard.

@Malumbu,

10 years!! That's would be the steam age.

Recommend you treat yourself to some new kit and enjoy the ride.

Would be interested in where you ordered your 'new build from'

My son in law is going to look at what Argos have as new stock expected. I am not IT savvy so would have to get an expert in to install programmes and transfer my existing files and hotmail account over to new machine.

Have you looked at dell, HP or lenovo websites?

For such light usage you can get a mini PC, about the size of a large book and can even be attached directly to the back of your monitor to save space.

These 3 manufacturers are the top tier, used by businesses and they offer 3 year warrantys.

We get our laptops from John Lewis.

I'm getting my new PC build from Compufix, 171 Old Kent Road, under their previous name modern computers they built my last one (and owner did admonish me that it was 14 years old) and done various repairs over the years. Low profile regards to reviews one on Google (five star) and one on Next Door.

Don't cycle your old PC in, as I did today, as it is not the easiest thing to attach to your rack, and I'll not do that with the new one.

Christian at Netquest in Pellatt Road could do that for you.

  • 3 weeks later...

Order the parts off Amazon and build your own! You may even be able to fit it in your existing case.

Seriously though, hard discs are too slow for Windows 10/11 nowadays and OEM machines come loaded with bloatware on top. Get something with an SSD (Solid State Drive) of at least 256GB and at least 8GB of RAM as a starting point and your new system will fly.

    • My annoyance Is with the fact that the gym is being closed for 5 weeks for refurbishment but we dont have an option to freeze our membership if the only facility we use is the gym. Apparently Peckham gym is closed at the same time for refurbishment which I think is pretty stupid. Therefore the nearest gym for all the members from ED leisure centre and Peckham leisurecentre is the one in Camberwell . I lament the everyone active days..at least I could attend gyms near to work and outside Southwark
