Gails Artisan Bakery

I recently bought some bread and dips from Gail's Bakery in Dulwich village.

I had been looking forward to trying the food from this bakery but was really disappointed.

The bread was rather tough and the hummus had far too much lemon in and tasted more like lemon curd than hummus!

The mackerel dip was a little better but I don't think I will be going there again.

And it is very expensive.

Sorry Gail's you don't get my vote.

But it was packed out so maybe I am alone in my views!

I went to Gail's for the first time, I brought a salad which I took to the park, when I opened it I found there was some added protein in the form of a caterpillar!

I did get a refund and an apology, but one member of staff laughed and asked if I named him!

I will to be rushing back..

I've been into Gails twice, to buy cinnamon buns, which are delicious BUT am completely put off by the pile of pastries and cakes stacked on the display stand just inside the door. I've seen a little girl flick her long hair over the cakes(yuk)and watched another kid stick his tongue out to have a sneaky taste(double yuk).

I now go to the Blackbird Bakery where at least the edibles haven't been sneezed on and are delicious too.

I had the same experience - very dry, tasteless and expensive (?1.60) baguette - can't help that the bread is displayed in the front window, in direct sunlight most of the day (amazing the number of places that do this). Also still not convinced by the self-service model in a lot of food shops these days, especially from a hygiene perspective.

    • Never knew any of this. Thought it was privately owned and just a not very successful restaurant and wedding venue. Ate there once, many years ago, and food was pretty average. Such a shame such a beautiful venue in a stunning location has not done better. I guess it is a bit out of the way?
    • Won't be the only thing getting touched in more ways than one, how comes this has been kept so secretive, and right on the door step almost of the village. The mind boggles at what's been going on under our noses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well this has certainly livened up the chat on a mid Saturday afternoon.  I've even got the perfect track for this...............................   Certainly not a "Dear God" situation.
    • Could you make that a link? I don't want to Google it or type the www in case I then get inundated with - well, not sure exactly what, but I suspect I wouldn't want to be inundated with it 🤣
