It's not just the chicken but most of the time the buns for the burgers are also stale.

Yes it's cheap but it's also stale and cold and maybe even yesterdays batch of cooked chicken. I see them in the evenings before they shut shop, stacking all the chicken together for use the next day. It's supposed to be destroyed every evening.

No matter how nice the guys are that serve in there it really is the worst chicken shop I've visited.

There are so many fried chicken shops in South London because of the large West Indian population. Curried goat is also a traditional Jamaican dish along with jerk chicken, both of which have been made into 'fast food stlye' restuarants, possibly inspired by chains such as KFC. I have to say fried chicken is delicious when drunk, but only when. Pumped full of hormones and reared in a battery too, so not green or healthy.

Agreed Jerk Rock doesn't do justice to Caribbean cuisine, a bit of trek but well worth it is the Trinidadian takeaway on Croxted road at the Herne Hill end, it's recently reopened under new management and it rocks. They have a very bad stereo playing very good Steel Drum music. The Roti's are great but the Doubles (Chick pea pancakes filled with curry, mint, yoghurt and other stuff) are gorgeous all smothered in Tamarind sauce, food from Trinidad tends to be more interesting than Jamaican with plenty of South Indian influences.

Resurrecting a very old thread, but seeing as this chicken shop (Maxin Grove Vale) is popular with kids, I wanted to warn people that the kitchen staff are literally sharpening their knives on the public pavement on Derwent Grove. I can hear an alarming metal sound outside daily - I look out and there's a guy wielding a 7 inch knife and scraping it along the floor. Needless to say, London's streets carry all sorts of dirt and, not trying to be melodramatic, disease - there's a fox that likes to hang out DG so god knows what sort of illness you could contract due to this practice. AVOID AVOID AVOID.

exactly!

I'd like to see people around here cook something for under ?3... one Friday night, after a couple of pints. It's satisfying to eat the forbidden food even if the heartburn is hell afterwards.

BTW they have the same hygiene rating as the palmerston. Now, tell me what can you buy for ?2.99 at Palmerston. I had a very disappointing burger at meat liquor for ?9.75

Maxine may not be for everyone, but let them live, people.

That?s not true. The Palmerston is ?generally satisfactory? whilst Maxin is ?improvement necessary?. Anyway, the Palmerston owners are currently spending a small fortune on upgrading their kitchen.

I don't care what food is being served, how it's being cooked, or even how much it costs. There is NO excuse for poor hygiene practises. It costs nothing to maintain clean worktops, clean floors and ha de and storing food items at the correct temperature in the correct part of a refrigeration unit.

Everywhere should have a 5 star food hygiene rating, or else be forced to close down (unless they work towards one).

    • In the proud spirit of stating the bleeding obvious (!) here is some more RSPCA advice re dogs in hot cars and a downloadable leaflet which contains emergency first aid for heatstroke: https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/dogs/health/dogsinhotcars https://www.rspca.org.uk/documents/1494939/7712578/Dogs In Hot Cars Leaflet.pdf/ade4c043-90ee-7091-c97f-02f047f7b4b3
    • What exactly is the point of having a go at someone who is trying to help and spread useful information? Is the heat getting to people? What does it matter what someone calls dogs?
    • In this heat, our wildlife from bees to birds and squirrels rely on our help. Please think about leaving out a tub of water for them… bees like a shallow dish with rounded stones for them to stand on while they drink.  Doesn’t  take much to help our local wildlife… get the kids to help!!! many thanks x
