DulwichFox
Landlords will be able to shop around and beat high tied brewery prices.. Doubt very much will will see prices drop at the pump as they say. :( DulwichFoz Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/31646-craft-beer/page/7/#findComment-799974 Share on other sites

Otta
That is wonderful news for anyone that likes a pub.As EP says, it's just a shame it's taken so long and so many good places run by good hard working people just couldn't survive being royally screwed by the PubCos. StraferJack
re: pricingThe options appear to be:lower prices to the public, and keep landlords on similar margins to the pubco daysKeep prices the same and allow landlords to make a living and encourage them to stay in the businessCan't help but feel there is a wider societal lesson there somewhere Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/31646-craft-beer/page/7/#findComment-799980 Share on other sites
Jeremy
Well... or a compromise between the two.But we all know how hard/impossible it has been to make money as a landlord of a tied pub, so an opportunity to carve out a living for themselves and their employees is not to be sniffed at... DaveR
"The options appear to be: lower prices to the public, and keep landlords on similar margins to the pubco days Keep prices the same and allow landlords to make a living and encourage them to stay in the business Can't help but feel there is a wider societal lesson there somewhere"I think there is too, but we may not agree on what it is. I think the lesson is that lots of small(ish) independent businesses freely competing with each other will provide a better product, and be more responsive to changing customer demands, than huge plcs. Whether landlords make a living (and some still won't) should depend on their own hard work and enterprise - and they'll decide what price is right for the product they offer. Jah Lush
It's also very good news for the plethora of local beer making businesses. I.e Late Knights, Gipsy Hill and Brockley Brewery, etc etc. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/31646-craft-beer/page/7/#findComment-800041 Share on other sites
DovertheRoad
Now well and truly mainstream...but why this continued obsession with IPA? There's lot's of potential in other styles like African Sorghum or perhaps just perfecting a light lager. Jeremy
Lots of the craft breweries make other styles.. porter, wit, hefewiezen, saison, geuze, pils.. but the hoppy American style is pretty addictive. I really like the German dopplebock beers, surprised we've not seen more along those lines from the craft brewers. Oily Telly Tyke
I think a lot of places make an IPA as a default beer as it's solid but you will find most breweries have at least 4 beers on their books that are varied in style and flavour. Jeremy, you are right the American Pale ales do very well especially as they are quite fruity with their hoppyness. Most breweries know they need to satisfy growing tastes and that's great news for beer fans as loads of new beers are coming onto the scene. Very good with garlic soup. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/31646-craft-beer/page/7/#findComment-936543 Share on other sites
